Does NTL broadband need a different DSL modem compared to modems for BT phonelines?

Just saw different listing with different prices in a Currys catalogue and was wondering if there is any difference.

    Thanks

They give you a modem or run it through the set top box, you can then connect the cable (standard RJ45) to a standard router if you want to share the conenction or plug it straight into your box if not

The modem they gave my friend is an USB modem. He wants to share the conenction between 2 PCs without needing to have one PC on to share it out. That required either an ethernet modem + router or a modem/router combo.

I am not entirely sure if you need different hardware for the NTL phone lines, as they are cable based.

NTL/Telewest is a cable supplier so if you were to get a DSL modem it would not work.

If i understand you correctly, The internet is being supplied via a rather thick cable with a bolt connection on the end. OR the internet is being supplied via the set-top box.
If its the Set-top box then its easier to phone up NTL?Telewest and ask them to give you a proper modem.
If the internet is coming from a small modem with said thick cable in the back of it then you need to get a modem that supports DOCSIS 2.0. However NTL/Telewest link your internet subscription to the mac address of the modem and any change to this (aka you getting a brand new modem) and youll have to inform them.

So in the long run its better to phone up NTL/Telewest and explain what needs to be done. They dont have any problem with sharing of internet. Ive got 9 computers running off my modem. :D

When they come and change over your modem ask for a Motorola Surfboard 5100. They are the dogs dangly bits of the cable modem world.

On a side note, NTL/Telewest is going to be re-named to Virgin soon apparently

I don't know what he's told you but thats wrong.

They give you a USB adaptor to connect the rj45 to usb if you need to, but EVERY NTL STB or modem has had ethernet, including the new opaque blue ones

Yea, look around the back, there should be a USB connection and an ethernet one.
