2080ti was basically never sold at retail, even today you would struggle to get one. The cheapest one on scan is £1107 so if the 3080 is £700 that’s a £407 saving. the kingpin edition that vault has is £1700 which is a whopping £1000 saving whatever way we look at it the 3080 will be faster and cheaper
I make no apologies for buying my Kingpin. It was a windfall, and it was better than ale and whores (especially given I don't drink nor use whores ) Apparently it could hit 2200mhz if I unlocked the volts (very safely) but for the 50mhz I won't void the warranty. However, bagging a cheap 2080Ti right now could well be the best thing. Yeah the 3080 will still be faster, but £ per frame it is already much cheaper. I got crap luck with my £475 card, but I just bought an Aorus Xtreme with a block on for £490. Which when you think about it was a steal.
60% improved perf/w with most of that from architecture, not process Not a 512 bit bus 128mb of 'infinity cache' to make up for lack of bandwidth No HBM on consumer cards Clocks speeds up to the 'console level', ie implies 2.3ghz 80CUs for top SKU 6700 - 3070 level 6800 - around 3080 6900 - faster than 3080 and may 'nip at the heels' of the 3090 AMD considered undercutting NV but may price the same AMD are 'very competitive, this is not Vega 64' If that is true (and I know I read it was 256 bit bus) then hooooooooooly balls.
Decided to grab a 1080ti for a bit over £300, easier to justify than a 2080ti even if they are better value, considering at christmas 1080tis were going for getting on £500 still seems like a good deal to me.
IMO this is a good plan - the 1080Ti is still a monster card and not long ago I paid not far off that for a 1080. The prices of the 10 series on ebay will probably continue to fall and there will be awesome bargains to be had.
I actually think 1080 Ti is incredible value at £300. Especially when 2080 Ti Is at £500. 66% price increase for only 25% more performance. 3080 at £650, if you can find stock, is a good value proposition. It’s rare to find 30% increase for both price and performance at the high end. 3070 in comparison is bad value, performance vs price should not be this proportional at high end. I’m only jumping on 2080 Ti because I fancied keeping a card for 4+ years, I don’t think 3070 can do that with 8GB VRAM. I’ve learnt my lesson with 970 3.5GB. If I had waited out with my 970, I’d have gotten 1080 Ti and be very happy with it. I also think now is the best time to pick up second hand bargain, as stock for new cards will be limited and people later catch on that new cards isn’t as much jump as they thought in normal use. However, the element of gambling is still present, variable is AMD. If their competition forced nvidia to release a refresh early next year or drop the price new cards (Eg 3070 Ti 16GB at £550) then will almost certainly be a good buy.
Mm well I'm hoping they don't keep falling too much as I ended up buying 2 so will aim to resell the worse of the two cards haha! (marketplace thread for a 1080ti at £330 or so coming up most likely!)
Wow that was a painful watch. That guy sounds like he's sucking sulphur hexafluoride. It's also the kind of dodgy/lazy reporting I was on about; lots of posing questions rather than statements, or following up statements with an immediate "is this true? I don't know. I can't confirm". Also lots of odd phrasing like "based on information from my sources" so it's not actually information from his sources, but he's making it sound like it is. His body language was also making me think he was making a lot of it up on the spot. Maybe he's right? But based on information from my sources and other things that I'm hearing (like the voices in my head) he's an AMD fanboy and is mostly wishing rdna2 is that good. But I could be wrong, couldn't I? I can't confirm any of this obviously. And I obviously can't verify it or show you any of leeks to protect my sauces.
But it's not information from his sources, or at least the ambiguous language he's using is a get out of jail free card for if they're wrong. If he has information that x, y and z will happen, then just say that, then if it doesn't happen just say well my sources were wrong. Non of this well, erm, maybe, possibly, on the other hand waffle like Hugh Grant asking his hooker for a refund. Also saying stuff like "rdna2 will be faster in some games, ampere in others", well no pipe Sherlock, it's been that way for decades! I'm not saying his information is right or wrong, but his non-committal, vague language is appalling "journalism".
True enough, he often uses the "if i say anything too specific it may make lead to the source and get them in trouble". I mean it's a valid point but it's also a great excuse to be ambiguous. I can conclusively say that Navi will be better and worse than Ampere and will cost less and more.
You'd have to give some pretty bloody specific information to reveal a specific source though. How many people do they have working on it that would know pretty much all the specs and performance? There may be less that know pricing, but anyone who's followed the graphics card market for the last few years know where they'll be priced. $50 dollars less than the "equivalent" Nvidia card.
I'm not here to defend him, the reality is nobody will really know until they're released. Hell, even the price may be decided on the actual day.
Prices have changed 2 hours before announcements before. You can give away a source by giving away info. It's more about the timing. Companies routinely give out different info at different times. This is how leaks get traced back.
TBH - I'm leaning towards Nvidia's own 3080 design as it's the slimmest at an apparent 2.0 slots, compared to what seems to be 2.7-3.0 slots for all the AIB cards.
I have a feeling AMD are leaking some info themselves. If big Navi really is all that I don't blame them. At least this time around they haven't made any ridiculous claims. Yet.
