i keep hearing about the wonders of nvidia's ION platform, but can't help reading them all thinking 'yeah, but what could it do with a proper cpu'. are there any mini-ITX systems using nvidia's 9400 chipset (like the ion platform) but that would allow me to put a real processor (AM2 or 775) in the system? i had a quick google, but it didn't turn anything up.

None that I can find. But then, you can get 780G in a mini-ITX board...

Gigabyte does one, socket 775, but can't remember the P/N

also asus do the P5N7A-VM which is 9300 based (olny clock speed is different - not a problem since the memory bandwidth is more crippling than the GPU speed)

I'm running one of these on a Q6600 and win7 - for an idea of performance, orange box games run quite well most of the time @ 1680x1050 with most settings at high (not all though and some complex scenes get a bit slideshowy)

haven't tried much else yet though. the eventual aim for this box is to put it into a XBMC box with a different CPU. just need the right case...

...Except he means Mini-ITX. Not Micro-ATX.

There's the Zotac Geforce 9300 Wifi... RRP's around $120USD on release (end of Feb), takes a skt 775 processor and it sounds perfect for what you need

Leave it a couple of weeks and start checking around, somewhere will have it listed soon ;)
