Maybe... But occasionally game changers do come along. If Mantle is all that . AMD would be wise to pay for a mantle level within a new game , or get a dev to add a 'beyond ultra' setting to some title (greyed out for non- compatible cards).

Something in which it can really show what vastly higher draw call/frame potential could do to introduce more variety into games. Futuremark or another, may also agree to let a 'mantle' benchmark prove that Titan beating potential AMD spoke of? Nvidia would then surely have to react, if AMD's top card was handling with ease some benchmark Titan was struggling with.

Nvidia reacted 5 years ago with NVAPI, AMD is merely leveraging the advantage they have in the console market to enable cross platform games to run on a lower spec AMD GPU than Nvidia.
I doubt games on the PC will be written to take advantage of Mantel, instead Mantel will be used to bring console optimisations to the PC.

If in performance this is more than a 780 but less than a Titan, then presumably that's where it will sit price wise... also between the two exsisting cards.

Over to Amd and the 290x.... let's see what ya got!

It's not. Microsoft has already stated that the Xbox One will not support Mantle (no surprise there,) while Sony hasn't said either way - but it's thought the PS4 won't be supporting it either.

Odd as AMD's own blog states the following...
    http://community.amd.com/community/amd-blogs/amd-gaming/blog/2013/10/17/the-four-core-principles-of-amd-s-mantle
Am i confusing SDK's with the words AMD are using to describe what seems like a unifying system ?

In their article explaining Mantle, Anandtech stated : "... it’s either a direct copy or a very close derivative of the Xbox One’s low level graphics API". Clearly that's not going to be the case with recent statements from Microsoft.

If Xbone ends up stuck with high level(performance sapping) DirectX, purely for political reasons . i.e., MS fears about a more open API - allowing a 'free' open platform, like the planned Steam OS to really take off. Then is it right to say their console could lose 'low level' possibilities altogether? Sony have also apparently said the PS4 won't be using Mantle either . Although, PlayStation 4 supports hUMA ; compute, queues and pipelines, whereas Xbox One does not . Sony also stated they'll support devs in going 'direct to metal' as soon as possible. There was the LibGCM interface for the PS3, which suggests that's likely.
