does this mean i'm gonna have to be changing graphics cards as much as i change my under wear ?

but i guess nividia is lookin to release dx10 cards in time for windows vista launch (maybe halo 2 for pc may be dx10 after all)

but 4 years in research and development i would hope that there would significant leap in performance over current gen graphic cards.

 

I've been putting off my upgrade until the first wave of DX10 cards come out -so this is great news for me

However, with ATI working with microsoft already on the xbox 360, which already carries unified drivers, you've got to favour them as the initial directx10 performance leader.

 

I can't wait untill these DirectX10 cards come out.

it does say a hybrid card though with regard direct x. so it might not be a fully dx10 compliant card. as im under the impression that the current dx9c cards will be able to handle certain stuff under dx10 when its released.

 

say i have a Dx10 card in my pc w windows xp will i have to upgrade to windows vista to get all the DX10 fx?

Yes - Windows XP will NEVER have full Dx10 compatibility, it will stop at DX9. That's why you have to buy Vista to play Halo II. Halo II wil be only be DX10 compatible and will not run on any operating system that is not DX10 compatible - ie, it will ony run on Vista and later Operating systems.

Actually, this news is quite disturbing to me as I initially planned on running Vista as a dual boot with XP. This seems to suggest though, that anything below Vista will not even run with a true DirectX10 card. I had hoped that XP would run with a DX10o, just with not all the features as with previous DX versions.

I wonder if this issue can be cleared up - will XP run on a DirectX10 system, but with some of the more advanced features disabled or will systems witha DX10 card ONLY be able to run Vista and above?

Also, is this card FULLY HDTV compatible - ie, does it support the encryption part that Vista uses to run HDTV discs?

 

It doesn't matter whether it's got separate vertex shaders and pixel shaders, because they'll make the card look unified on a software level, IMHO.

DirectX 10 is Shader Model 4.0, so it brings more complex shaders to the table.

 

Ah fob off Nvidia... these guys need to cut out the "incremental upgrade" stuff that they've been doing since the FX days, same with ATI. It's frustrating to buy a pair of cards, to have them rendered slow six months later. Update your hardware, and what happens yet again?

 

Actually, the 6800 Ultra launched in April 2004 and then they launched GeForce 7800 GTX in June 2005. After that they launched 7800 GTX 512 in November 2005 (which now looks like a 'kick ATI in the balls' part with no availability) and IMHO the 7900 GTX is the real replacement to 7800 GTX (256MB), and that launched last week.

 

Every year, fine then. It's also frustrating to see the 78XX be replaced by 79XX. What's next, we'll see a 77XX replacing the fledgeling 76XXs? These tiny upgrades, are what the initial cards should've been IMO.

 

I think it's good, because otherwise we would have a stagnant market for about a year.

 

It always used to be 'wait for such and such'. I don't think that's true anymore - if you're in the market to buy something, buy it when you've got the money because there's no point waiting as there's something better around the corner all the time. The old saying that the computer you buy off the shelves is already out of date is very true, even more so now than when that statement was first used in the early 90's.

 

If you're going to buy off the shelf, or order boutique, by the time that box is in your hands it's out of date mate.

G80 is months if not years away so I'm guessing it will be the launch of a new mobile part.

 

Same here! Well, actually, I'll be buying a new computer around July or August, but I'm just going to put in a "placeholder" card until I can get a DX10 card. I know it doesn't make sense to wait in the computer industry, since new stuff is always coming out, but I think in this particular case it does make sense to wait.

I might be mistaken, but I was under the impression that DirectX 10 cards would support a seperate DirectX 9 mode as well. Is this incorrect?
