http://www.overclock3d.net/articles...use_gddr5x_memory_with_next_generation_gpus/1 ok - so rumours might be true regarding constrained HBM2 supplies? since the article says its Micron - could this be the start of HMC ram as well? rumour mill says HBM2 will only be on Titan next!
The following preceded a similar article on another website: "Note: Readers are advised to read this rumor with a grain of salt as it contains information that has not been officially confirmed. The report is originally published by TweakTown and you can see the original details over at 3DCenter. The piece simply speculates the possibility of GDDR5X being a possible solution for AMD/NVIDIA GPUs placed in the mid-range and entry-level markets as a more cost efficient option to HBM. HBM2 will be on GP100 for sure, which means x80 Ti and Titan. Likely GP104 too given that AMD has already put HBM in that segmentand enthusiasts won't accept anything less. NV knows its TA. GP106/7/8 will be GDDR5/5X to keep cost down and provide a natural upgrade path. 5X is desperately required since 128bit bus is limiting in mid-range/mainstream and 5 has been stuck on 7Gbps for a while. 8Gb chips means 4 of them give a solid 4GB. You can't design a chip for both due to physical interposer and memory controller differences. It's either one or the other. It won't use HMC because Micron is selling that to Intel for Phi and it's low vol. Samsung/Hynix are worlds biggest memory companies - they will have enough to provide volume for NV.
