How does the GTX 280 line up with the rest of Nvidia's cards? The only reason I ask is because I was lucky enough to get 2 x EVGA GTX 280's at a bargain price, would I see a big increase in performance (and 3D Mark scores) if I was to buy a 3rd and run it in SLI with the other 2?

I know a few people will say flog them and get a DX11 card but that does not interest me atm, if DX10 was anything to go by then support for it will be thin on the ground anyway.

no, 3 way SLi does not deliver.
GTX 280 is more or less GTX 275; and it's not important, since with two of them, you don't need ATI's new "marketing".
Only GT300 will be more than you have. (but you'll have to dig deep in you bank account)

no point you won't need the extra performance

Why would you even want to? Where would that get you? It's madness is what it is.

The GTX 280 sucks anyway. It's hot, inefficient, and poor value for money, especially considering it's bettered by the much cheaper 4890.

well i wouldn't call the 280gtx slow orthat the 4890 is better interms of performance

just stick with what you have got. use the money to upgrade something else in your rig

Look at some benchmarks, it's much closer than you think.

    Seriously, tri-SLI is so 2007.

So am I, that's what I meant by benchmarks. You'll find them in every review.

The 4890 holds its own and even beats the GTX 285, let alone the GTX 280, and that's just based on performance, even before heat, noise, overclocking and price are considered.

there is no point... even for games etc, why would you need it? GTX 285 can run any game max'd and do you perfectly fine maxed for like 2-3 years..

The gtx285 clocks well but if you have the asus matrix card and up the volts a little you can get some serious clocks out of it. I've had one running 842/1866/2940 and at those speeds it's even faster than a stock 5870 in some cases, an epic card!

They are powerful enough that he can laugh at ATI's direct 11 offer.

Gtx 280's in SLI are more than capable of playing any game you throw at them.Crysis, Far Cry 2, Gta IV to name a few intensive titles run fine with that setup. Getting a third card is becoming too much of an 'Enthusiast' while also being pointless as 2 cards can achieve a 60fps average in anything. Regarding the new ATI cards, I was expecting more performance for the hype and now feel underwhelmed. I hope Nvidia pull a gtx 280 sized performance gain out of the hat as its not looking good for previous generation high end card owners ( Myself included but I don't need an upgrade ) who want to upgrade to the new cards and gain a large performance increase to boot.

Tbh the only thing I would do that even comes close to a third SLI card is get a 9600GT and run it as a physx card (and a F@H card when not in use)
