News NVIDIA's next dual x16 SLI is two chips

    I get the feeling that this chipset wont be as massively popular as Nvidia's previous SLI solutions; from the looks of things, there arent enough PCI slots, and no one is going to like having to stick one in just because they dont want to replace their hard drives and or optical drives. SATA opticals arent THAT easy to come by yet.

    Ill be happy when all the Opticals are sata cos itll help with the old cables

    That PCI slot will be taken up by the sound care -- what do you do about raid etc? (ok you have 6 SATA slots.. but what happens if you want more disks :(

    You can support up to 5 or 6 PCI slots on a normal PCI bus so it's no biggy. Its just cause that Abit board uses the daughterboard for a soundcard.
    As for a single p// port, ive suffered it with 925X and 955X for a while now and it's no problem, and I just only now bought a SATA Plextor DVD drive for £32. MOST people dont use more than two and you can still buy PCI p// ATA cards... Ooo wait.. ;)
    I can see them being just as popular because the new NF5s have HDaudio and 6 SATA will make native raid5 easier etc, and people will want the latest and greatest. Eventually NV will just stop making NF4 chipsets anyway and concentrate on NF5 production despite NF5s being undoubtably more expensive.

    Just out of interest - how much cooler from the chipset's maximum temperature do those heatpipe efforts get?

    I know it's a difficult one to answer - but what with watercooling to reduce airflow (and therefore noise), it'll be a killer on flow to have 2 chipset blocks.

    I've got dual chipsets on my K8WE and it's not problem. Big honking heatsinks, but passivly cooled. I think in the end this will be a non-issue.

    cheers! Presuming the secondary chip will be significantly cooler!

    Cthippo - SNAP! Same mobo, should have thought about that - only on 248 cpu's for my server though... air cooled... wish I could use it for my desktop! You be a lucky man (guessing the SLI isn't for a server!)

    You would be guessing correctly :D

    When I was thinking about my next computer I really wanted dual processors and some things came together at the right time so I could afford it. I'm running stock coolers on everything right now and the noise is annoying, but the performance is worth it. It also does a good job if keeping my room warm.

    My server on the other hand is an old K7 on an Abit AT7 mobo. Gets the job done.
