I saw them in stock for a while, and considering nVidia's recent trend, I certainly wouldn't call it a paper-launch yet. Back in stock next week would be perfectly acceptable, especially considering it's the new best-you-can-get rather than better-value-but-not-the-best-out-there.

Not surprised really. I wonder what SLI 7800gtx512s could make of FEAR. First playable soft shadows perhaps... that is, of course, assuming you're insane enough to drop $1500 on VIDEO CARDS ALONE. Especially considering you can get two or three full midrange computers for that price.

Only flaw there is that as soon as you can max out everything, when that next game comes out and you can't, it's time for another upgrade or your sanity starts to degrade.

Damned firsthand experience combined with minimum wage job....

You know, this is all very reminiscent about those rumors about shortages for the XBox360. Could this be a similar marketing strategy?

I highly doubt nvidia is using this as a marketing strategy, they make great cards with awesome performance and currently have the only viable dual GPU setup atm. Hell my dad is 62 and only plays solitaire on his computer and he buys video cards like their baseball cards.

Edit: After all, how many cards could they possibly hard launch with? If they wanted marketing all they would have to do is strap that baby with some Ln2 and fire up 3dMark. :jawdrop:

I don't think those are rumors anymore. My gf preordered me an xbox360 and she found out today that instead of the 43 the store was supposed to get, they're now getting 25 and she's been bumped onto the third list of people getting preorders which they don't expect to have until 06. If this was a marketing strategy, I think they would have just overhyped the cards and said they won't have many then sold tons because people thought they were going to be hard to get. Instead they've actually sold out implying that there actually was/is a shortage.

This might be the next slap in ATI's face. After getting beaten by quite a bit by nVidia now those cards sell better than even nVidia expected them to.
I really would like to buy one of these babies... but **** I'm a student not a lottery winner. :eyebrow:

which is what he intended. retailer means storefront, etailer means online reseller (Newegg, etc)

nVidia hasn't been advertising these for months and months, unlike Microsoft. In fact, I've yet to see ANY ad for them (though, in fairness, my adblock filterset.g is VERY effective) and I hadn't even heard a rumor until less than a week before the NDA was lifted and the simultaneous launch. There's no conspiracy. There's a very popular product with more demand than they anticipated.

NVIDIA wouldn't make an artifical shortage of their high-end part. The high-end is where the money is for card makers. For the console it makes a bit more sence to generate an artifical shortage to drum up hype, they loose money on each console. Granted, I still think a console shortage is a mistake as well, considering the more people that you can get a console too the more people will be buying games for that console, which is where the money is.

If the high end is where the money is, why does Intel own most of the graphics market?

Am I not right in thinking regardless of the price the r/etailers sell the cards at, nvidia still recieve the same dollar for the units sold to them? So self induced shortage as to say, wouldnt give greater income to nvidia? If anything just mean less to nvidia? But im probably well off track

Indeed, in fact ATI are currently doing very well and Nvidia less so, due to the Radeon 9550 which has replaced many OEM's previous choice of the 5200. The highend doesn't have that much money it in, it would appear.

The high end is where the margins are, though.
