In july I will be going on holiday for three weeks, first to NY for a week, then to Costa Rica for another two. In Costa Rica we will be backpacking so I want to limit what I bring on this trip. I'm doubting between these three setups: 5D mkII - no grip - 35L + 85/1.8 5D mkII - no grip - 35L + 135L 5D mkII - no grip - 24-70L First setup would offer primes for reasonable weight. Second would give me L glass (seems like a smart idea for rain/moist/dust) and a little more reach for animals/wildlife. The last setup would just limit my gear to just one lens but give me less reach. The 35L seems perfect for city (NY) and nature. While I would like to have a more telephoto lens with me for some wildlife if I do come across it or more close-up portraits (street photography). I also plan to bring my gorrilapod with ballhead, for nightphotography and as a tripod and a remote trigger/timer. No flash. I am also bringing my gopro hd 3 black edition for the sport activities (rafting, ziplining, surfing, etc..). What are your thoughts? thanks.
24-70L. When in doubt, always carry the zoom. besides, it's 2.8, so it's fast enough at night. When I'm travelling light, 24-105L and the 35/2 is all I'd bring. zoom for everything, f2 lens for in-doors.
The 24-70 extends when zooming. With all the humidity I'd rather go with a closed lens, like the 35mm and 135mm. Also it's quite a brick.
I just returned from a trip to India where due to backpacking and going to some crazy crowded places I could only take one camera and few lenses. 24-105 + 35L In your case I have no doubt I would take 24-70 + 35 There is no doubt in my mind that in New York you'll want 24mm and even wider for many shots and then the zoom will help very much to get some interesting characters. Changing between primes would be just meaningless as during the day you might have to close down the aperture anyways if it's bright. So the prime then is mostly for interesting portraits and night time... which I would pick 35 anytime over 135. Unless you REALLY REALLY don't want to get into people faces, and want to hang around one place fishing for far distance sneaky portraits. Otherwise I don't see a point for 135. That's my suggestion. We should meet up in NY
