    Hi all,

If I was to overclock an i5 2500k on a Asus Gene-Z motherboard, using the stock intel cooler, what speeds would I be looking to achieve whilst keeping the machine stable?

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for coolers for an i5 2500k? I wouldn't have a watercooling setup (too much hassle) though I'd consider a self contained W/C unit.

from what I can see on scan, they can get 4.7ghz using an aftermarket cooler, but im interested in what other peoples actual experiences with them have been like, both with stock and aftermarket coolers

    Any input/feedback is much appreciated

    Cheers

Ditch that stock cooler immediately, it basically can't handle OC. Something like a Thermaltake Frio or Be Quiet! Dark Rock Advanced are good choices for air cooling - and they're the ones usually used for hitting 4.7Ghz.

My i52500K on the same board will crank up to 4.9Ghz, but gets a bit too toasty at that temperature. I normally run at a 4.5Ghz day-to-day OC, mainly dictated by the airflow in the case. When I had an R3, I had it at 4.7Ghz.

    After reading this here http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cooling/2011/03/18/be-quiet-dark-rock-advanced/3

"If you’re looking for a cooler for your shiny new LGA1155 system the Dark Rock Advanced has everything you want. It coped admirably with our 4.6GHz overclocked Core i7-2600K CPU and put many other coolers to shame with its ultra-low noise levels. At £40, it’s the same price as the Frio, but while the latter was 4˚C cooler, this was using its maximum fan speed, which is unpleasantly noisy.

In contrast, the Dark Rock Advanced is quieter than the Frio at its lowest fan speed, but just 2˚C warmer. That’s a worthy compromise for a more pleasant PC experience."

For the temp difference id rather have the quieter machine, so I just ordered the Be Quiet! Dark Rock Advanced from scan.

I'm now so skint i may have to go to my mums house to eat for a week or so haha!

Many thanks cei, I might ask you for some O/C advice when it arrives if thats ok?

    Have some rep :D

Good choice on the Dark Rock - you'll be very happy with it! Just take your time installing it, as all these air coolers are rather large and heavy, so if you don't tighten everything right you'll twist it off the board (yes, I know somebody who did this). Don't forget some thermal compound as well if it doesn't come with any!

Drop me a line for OC stuff, though there are others on the board who are the true experts - you may find it easier to add to this thread (change the title etc) so multiple people can chip in :)

I wouldn't recommend anything other than the Arctic i30

£30 and you get basically the best performing air cooler that there is for 1155. Oh and it's as quiet as a feather landing on a bed of air or something like that lol

Edit: Nevermind, appears I was too late.

I've got some artic silver that should do the trick, its been literally years since i put thermal paste on a cpu, il have to read up on how to do it (properly) so i dont fall at the final hurdle. thanks for the advice too on the cooler, it does like a bit of a heavy brute so i'll bear that in mind when i come to install it.

got it on next day delivery, which is when most of my parts should be arriving (if they havent arrived today). quite excited actually, havent built a decent machine for myself in years due to moving to gaming laptops instead.

Will no doubt be asking for more help on mobo settings for o/c'ing when it arrives, will change thread title to build advice incase anyone else has something that will help :D

    Cheers

just read that review, seems a really good cooler too, seems theres plenty of good coolers to choose from in terms 1155's! still, i prefer the black look of the be quiet! though obviously the freezer is a tenner cheaper. Still, cheers for the heads up!

Yeah, aesthetics does come into a bit. I like the i30 and am considering it for the near future.

Not sure it was a heads up though, more of 'look what you could have bought moment' because I was too slow lol

Anyway, good luck with overclocking. Make sure to post results and voltage etc :thumb:

Why do people actually overclock these days?

I never seem to use my 2500k more than 30% even when gaming.

    Someone enlighten me :)

For epeen? :p And also, it depends on your setup. If you're running 3 monitors for your games then the CPU is going to have to do a fair bit more work so the added speed would help.
