    Hi,
I was wondering if you experts here could answer some questions for me?

I'm gettin ready to machine my own waterblock. If i were to machine it out of al, then solder on a piece of 1/8 or 1/16 aluminum for mounting, would i have to use an 'o' ring? If so, where could i find one in the states?

    Thanks in advance

I'm guessing you are intending to solder the plate for mounting as a lid to cover the channels.... if that is what you are doing no you wont need an o-ring as the solder should make things watertight (also I think an o-ring would melt if you were soldering close to it as they are usually some kind of rubber)
    .
make sure to take lots of piccies as you make the block....

ur best bet for an o-ring will probably be a machine shop.....i mean u could try to cut a lil peice of rubber and stuff it down there but u should get one that fit perfect.....

    anybody else have an idea?

You can buy o-rings at a hardware store. They do come in many different sizes. Not sure if its the same that waterblock manufacturers use but you can give that a try. I'm with mctoby tho, why would you need one? (unless your doing a clear removable top, are you zip?)

I've only ever heard of O rings being used in bolt together setups.
I would imagine you run a risk of melting it if you heat the surrounding alu to the required temps, and shouldn't need one with a soldered or welded joint anyway, surely.

You may wish to read this page and this pdf before commencing, to get a better idea of what's involved in joining alu. :)
Apologies if this covers what you already knew.

I can't imagine the 'O' surviving the soldering process. A plumbers store will sort you out if you still require one.
