Hello all, Okay, so I went through my games today and decided I wanted to reinstall and play Oblivion. I have the game of the year edition which comes with Knights and Shivering isle. The install went fine and I started to play, went down into the dungeon after the crumbling wall, then it froze, went to a white screen then crashed back to windows, showing this: Problem signature: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: Oblivion.exe Application Version: 0.1.0.228 Application Timestamp: 44045dcb Fault Module Name: Oblivion.exe Fault Module Version: 0.1.0.228 Fault Module Timestamp: 44045dcb Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 002d34ba OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1 Locale ID: 2057 Additional Information 1: 27c8 Additional Information 2: 27c8ce5af7a07bedf550bd9c573901b3 Additional Information 3: 5fc1 Additional Information 4: 5fc1fda0761b3f55dd155adcd1fe82fc Now, here is what I have tried to remedy this: Full wipe and reinstall Install only oblivion vanilla Patch with the official patches Patch with the unofficial patches Add a couple of mods that affect the beginning of the game Try a different screen resolution Put graphics down to low and vice versa Disable pretty much every background application Remove overclocks Use a no-dvd executable All of my drivers are fully up to date. Any ideas on what else i can do? Thanks, Fish.
Ok, we gonna need way more info to track this one down: Is it Always the exact same place, or slightly/widely different? What mods did you try? (pls list all, even if they seem unrelated) Are you using a Mod Manager for this mods, if any? Are you using OBSE (Oblivion Script Extentions)? I've seem a mod on Tes Nexus that started players in a cave with no intro - just exit cave and go. Maybe try that. It maybe be that that specific cell (map) is damaged somehow with your copy. Also I could be that your graphics drivers are too new - remember Oblivion is a rather old game now. What card do you have anyway? Oblivion can get very nasty when it desides to not work, the cause may be rather unrelated. Having said that, I've personally seen that type of error when dealing with mods (in the very wide, general sense of the word) Anyway, let us know, and we'll take it from there.
Okay: It is anywhere from when the guards first walk into your cell, upto where you fight the first set of assassins. I tried the quick start mod, where there is an exit straight after the crumbling wall. I've tried a mod that has the cell door unlocked, but alas it crashes as soon as you walk out. I also tried a couple of different mods that put armour and gold into the first dungeon. The main reason i reinstalled was to try modding, I am new to it. I have not used a mod manager and do not know what OBSE are. I cannot find the mod where you start in a cave... :-( I have an 8800GT, with the latest drivers. The crash still happens on a fresh install without any mods whatsoever...
I resolved these sorts of issues (which are usually caused by a damaged disc) by simply obtaining a pirated disc image and installing from that instead - since I'd already bought it, I regarded this as morally acceptable and harmless. However, as per bit-tech's policy, I absolutely cannot advise that you do that. Most manufacturers, however, will give you a replacement disc if you write to/phone them, either for nothing (send them your original disc) or for a small fee. Alternatively, buy the GOTY pack again on Steam, if you think it's worth the money, because then you're guaranteed a working copy - or if it doesn't work, you know it's your hardware/OS, not the game copy.
I damaged my original FO3 CD. Being one of my favourite games and fancying an additional play-through, I contacted them and asked Bethesda if they could possibly give me a replacement (not needing a CD key and I was quite willing to pay). They were quite strict in saying that there was way at all this is possible. I was a little upset. I downloaded it. I got over it (kind of). I still <3 Bethesda, although a little miffed they were so disinterested. Sh!t happens.
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11495 Might solve your problems, it basically starts you in a boat in imperial city, you chose your starting stuff, and leave, saves doing the entire intro bit. http://www.obse.silverlock.org/ Is for obse (not required by the above mod, but well worth getting, as many mods do require it). It basically adds a lot of extended stuff mod makers use (in fact stands for Oblivion Script Extender), to use it, download it and extract it to the oblivion directory, you can then start the game via the obse.exe It won't really have any visual impact, but will be needed for many mods.
Tried OBSE and ran the alternative start. It freezes as soon as I get out of the boat... Looks like I might have to download it!
If you do, however, do not confirm in this thread that you've done so, do not imply that you got the idea from your use of the bit-tech forums, and do not in any way describe how you did it. I've had like 2 or 3 temp bans for mentioning piracy now, even in justified or tangential contexts, so just gotta give you a heads up.
Here's a thing... I've uninstalled rivatuner and it has stopped crashing. However, everything looks like something from the 90's, the graphics are terrible, even on high... The grass is made up of huge purple pixels and the concrete looks like water... I think my installation is buggered... Edit: Sorted! Shader problem.
