Hi all. Looking for some help cos im stuck! :sigh:

Ive recently built a core i5 system with a gigabyte GA-P55-US3L mobo and overclocked it to 3 gig with a base clock of 160mhz and this worked fine. Ive now upgraded from XP to windows 7 and because i had some problems installing it i loaded defaults in bios just to help matters along it is now installed and running fine but when i try and overclock again i cant get past 149mhz base clock without the computer refusing to start let alone post. The fans spin up and after 2 secs turn off then just keeps on doing the same thing untill switch off at psu.

This hapens even with multiplyer of 9. Ive tried increasing voltages underclocking the ram switching off turbo boost and energy saveing features all sorts. is there something ive missed?

It also used to overclock quite happily using software that came with the mobo but that does it also. For some reason it seems to be when i set a base clock of 150mhz and upwards any ideas? i know my machine is a capable overclocker im just worried iv scuppered it.

    Many Thanks. Simon.

Never mind. I found if I increase voltages but leave base clock at stock values the same thing happens. So its either gonna be temps or my psu struggling ( its an old hiper type R 480W ).
By being a bit more conservative with the voltage ive managed to get my base clock of 160mhz and the cpu running at 3.2Ghz. The temps dont pass 60 deg. when under load so I guess Ill need a new psu if I want to approach 4Ghz.
Thanks Annyway. I was probably being too impatient.

    Hyper Type R..... (shudder)...

I used to have one of those... it went fubar on me, and took out my motherboard as well.

I would put money on the PSU crapping out. 480W should be plenty (depending on your graphics card) but the quality is not great.

well ive had it 4 years and its survived 2 upgrades so i think for the £50 it cost its done me proud. It was bought at a time when there werent many fantastic psu's around. there a lot better these days thanks to the likes of custom PC but i find theyre all a lot more expensive as a reasult.

The only gripes i have with mine now is its a bit noisey and theres no pci xpress connectors.

And possibly its giving up
    BTW. GFX card is 8800gt.
