Is it me or is Rift heading new development routes instead of gaming focused ones?
Is still Carmack in head charge of development?

    It’s just you.

They’ve said time and time again, even in the last weeks, that the rift is purely gaming focused (though devs can do with it what they please) for the foreseebale future.

In relation to the above, this tech would allow us to potentially gamify our surroundings – similar to what Microsoft are doing with Hololens.

Also, Carmack hasn't even been in charge of development, though he is in important figure. His official position is CTO.

Except that Mark Zuckerberg, their Fluffy Corporate Overlord, stated that 'after games, we're going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences.' Now, okay, that's after games - but it's clear that there's a foreseeable future in which the Rift is not 'purely gaming focused.' Hell, back in February Oculus VR put up $1 million in prizes to encourage the development of 'VR experiences and apps' - a chunk of which went specifically to non-gaming projects - and is actively working with companies on virtual reality video projects, so it's not even 'purely gaming focused' now, never mind in the 'foreseeable future.'
