Okay here is an odd issue I'm wondering if anyone has seen before (just after general advice to explain the issue to the ISP as they are having a failure to comprehend).

So a brief description is below

When ISP router is reset everything appears to work well for between 60 and 90 minutes then with no changes in router settings lots of sites won't load at all and others become very slow requiring multiple refreshes to work. These are major mainstream sites like BBC, FDJ.FR, metoe agricole, so not small niche sites.

The instant I connect to nord VPN or cloudwrap everything works fine with just a few extra ms of ping and the expected reduction in bandwidth. These issues happen regardless of the device used, anyhting that uses the router has these issues but the second a phone changes to 4 or 5G everything is good (phone service from same company so the issue isn't affecting the mobile routing).

I'm assuming a traceroute issue and indeed when I run a test from the tool on the router I can see it stalls at step 5 which is identified as an ISP router,

Running the cloudflare internet test shown no issues and 0 packet loss when run from the PC.

Any one got any thoughts on this?

What DNS servers are you using? ISP DNS servers are notoriously crap - try setting the DNS on the router to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) and/or Quad9 (9.9.9.9) and see if that helps.

Depending on the ISP is could be a cheap nasty router, check to see if there are any firmware updates for what ever you are using. Also like Flibblbot said use a better DNS provider, you should be able to configure this at the router level in it's GUI.

Does sound like a dns issue really strange one though.

Are you just using isp router or are you running a double NAT with your own firewall / router?

Good day all, thank you for the replies.

I had changed the DNS servers to cloudflare and google, firmware was up to date.
I had run a traceroute and it was always failing at step 5.

After further chasing with the ISP I got an email on the 6th of December saying the issue had been referred to a higher level of tech support and within 2 hours the issue had been resolved, I've no ideal what they changed but I'm happy to report I've had no issues since the change (the trace route now completes without error, 1st 4 steps are the same but step 5 is a different Ip address).
