hey all, got a strange one for ya. got 3 PCs running windows vista, all using exact same Hardware and have the addition of CCTV cards. (runs in a PCI-e x1 slot) They shut down every now and again. seems random and they dont all do it at the same time. They are in seperate locations around the building so different circuits and all that. anyone make any suggestions as to the culpret ? only things i can think of are: 1) overheating (case is pants) 2) faulty batch of PSUs/mobos 3) power problem therefore no issue with the PCs
some cctv cards have a "watchdog", that normally jacks onto the reset button. It could be the watchdog thinks the pc has crashed so it's hitting the reset button. try updating the software ? or pull the reset cable from the card. i do recall the card we ordered had only a few validated hardware configurations, as they can be very finiky about what they're installed with. (especially the motherboard chipsets)
yeah im very familar with the CCTV cards since its me who builds the unit. It does have a reset jack but i dont use it and its not even connected. Im 100% certain on the hardware config as ive built many others the same and had no problems at all. The only restriction i have is cant use ATI chipsets or VIA ones. Version is not most up to date but its not old less than 1 year and there has only been some minor updates. I have never had this issue before on any other CCTV PC ive built and they run older, same and newer versions of the software.
Does the Windows Error log suggest anything? it may be worth getting(beg/borrow/steal/buy) a small UPS for one of them, which would rule out or confirm power issues.
well havent been out yet. im off tomor morning first thing. i guess ill just have to do some proper checking of the system. Ive been told that there are no aparent issues by IT techs so im guessing they checked the system over. just was getting a head start as currently i cant really think of any issue that would effect all 3, 1 yes
Does the O/S have power management enabled? E.g. sleep or hibernation mode causing it to go doolally and reset?
just got them back to base. 1 had a failed PSU so easy fix, 1 has a faulty HDD and the others have shutdown issues but dont show anything. my best guess would be flaky PSUs as they are cheapo ones (i know dont ask)
