We have been getting odd phone calls for the past few days but the line quality is so bad we can't put the words together to form a sentence.

The number is odd and does not seem to match up with any of the UK area codes, it's 05645 876754.

don't think it's a call centre if the quality of the line is that bad. I did some reasearch and this suggests the number may have originated from Temuco in Chile assuming it IS an international number. Although I don't know how 1471 reads out international numbers.

Can anyone suggest what the hell it might be, it's been bugging us!

Definitely Chile... country code 056 is that and easter island.

Maybe they found some Incan gold and would like to give it to you through an escrow service! :p

You might want to pull that number... It's a BT VOIP number, basically someone who's got BT Total Broadband and one of the new BT Homehubs has called you and not set the outgoing line to be forced as PSTN, and defaulted to their VOIP line.

Likelyhood is, it's someone you know... or a company which uses BT VOIP (Santander, BT, HBOS etc)

But for everyone's use, 055 and 056 numbers are BT VOIP, nothing to be scared of, usually just someone didn't RTFM..
