Yet again a neighbourhood cat has torn a refuse sack apart scattering the contents across the garden. Its not very pleasant having to clear this up, i have tried spray repelants (they dont work) and our Council refuse collectors dont to bins (just the black plastic sacks)

So i was thinking how about a simple / small electirc fence to put round the refuse sack, i am sure kitty will get the idea after a few shocks :naughty:
Running of a car battery, or ordinary c/d cell batteries would be useful

People sell pest repellats that work of a really high frequency (we can't hear it) that cats and dogs and other pests really hate. Might be a bit easier in the long run, especially when you have to explain when next doors cat is laying in your garden, cooked to perfection.

i hav been playion recently witha lil hand held uv tube thingy, found inside an ivertor which makes 130V AC from 2 aa cells, only problem is its bugger all current, i was wondering if i used a bridge rectifier (to make it DC) and a few fair sized caps i could draw a larger current until the caps were discharged, something lke that may owrk?

I don't really think its a good idea to charge up capacitors and leave it so animals can touch it. Cats are a lot smaller than us remember, and we only need 16J to cause our hearts to go into fibrillation. Only a fraction of that would be needed to kill a cat...

Cats dislike citrus fruits, so leaving a cut open lemon may help, or a ultrasonic repeller as acrimonious said. Or why not just put the bags in something? (like a bin)

SteveyG does have a very good point tho, its not really fair to kill the neighbours at, give everything a good coating of curry/chilli powder, tabasco sauce jelapeno peppers etc, it will go off ur bins v quickly

If a refuse collector touched it you could get seriously fined, or if he's a burly bloke, get your ass kicked in!

Oh, BTW I take it you own/like VW Beetle's then?

No danger of refuse collector touching it as it will be in garden and they are not allowed to come into garden to collect rubbish where we are, it is road side collection only.

    yep, like vdubs:D

Try using an inverter for a CC, I have been zapped by one before, it gives a powerful shock, but not enough to even knock you down.

I heard somewhere that if you leave an inverter on without a power-"consumer" it'll die

We have a similar-ish problem at home. We keep the bin-bags in some self-purchased mini-wheelie-bins, but ours is also a road-side collection (black sacks) only, so we can't put the bins out there.

Only problem, we put the bins out the night before they're collected ready for morning, but 10 mins after we go back inside, they get ripped apart by the cat... our cat. :(

Still, we're moving in 5 weeks, so never mind. :p

    i disagree, cook that ******* ;)

but seriously, electric fences work i tihnk by sending PULSES of electricity down every so often (i can only work this out by the way i once touched one, at it took a few seconds for me to get a shock!). A car battery would problalbly be way too powerfull! maybe take a camera flash out a camera :)lol:  ). Hook it up to a AA battery, make it ocntinually discharge through the wire, thatd be a good fence :D

A camera flash could easily kill the cat, i made a taser out of a disposable once.

Get a small half-working(as long as the picture tube glows, it's OK) TV or monitor(good use for that old monitor in the closet), connect the HV lead to the fence(be sure to discharge it first!), and there you go.
The HV supply in a TV or monitor can't deliver more than a mA at most, so it's safe(a small capacitor in the HV PSU can supply more for a moment, but it's very tiny(less than a joule)).
If you want something simpler than that, connect the hot lead of the AC outlet(through a nightlight bulb) to the fence.

Put it in a bin until collection day? I assume you move it from the garden to the road.. so you can take it out of the bin then.

I really hope you are joking. HT leads in CRT monitors have KILLED TV repairmen - 28kV at a few mA is very dangerous. If you do the calculations, you'll see that it is not safe at all, nor is it as low as 1J. Rigging up that arrangement with your AC outlet is also very dangerous for a human, let alone a small animal.

This thread is just wrong/immoral. Just spray some pepper or use an ultrasonic repeller - its so much more humane.

Surround the bin in hard clear plastic so it confuses the hell out of the cat. Not cruel, and you get a cheap laugh watching the cat get confused :)

One of my mate's nextdoor neighbours has one of those supposed `ultrasound` cat-repeller thingys, and it *is* audible to human ears - god knows how the people in that street get to sleep :grr:
