Both are good. I can honestly say I like winXP, and server 2003 is getting a lot of praise as a very serious platform. Linux/unix speaks for itself really
microsoft is definitely the way to go for "your average pc user", but of course, linux is for the more advanced. i do like windows xp, but i've playing with linux some and if i could play all my games on linux, i would probably drop windows all together and go full-linux (well, once i learned linux better i would anyways )
indeed i also can play all my games on linux and i know linux much better then windows so when theirs a problem with linux (gentoo distr) i know much better what to do
white modder, is that a typo, or did you really mean you CAN play all games in linux? if so, what are you using to do it?
Microsoft is getting better (there should be an option for that). I hate a lot of things about it but there are a lot of things I like. Its nearly impossible to play every game on linux. WineX works to an extent, but the majority of games are still for Windows still. Its starting to change though. Most people make linux ports now (except Valve, mooks). I find it really interesting how nearly everybody releases the client for Windows and the server for Linux and Windows. I find that really offensive. Why would I set up a server on a Linux box when I can't even play it natively? Thats whats happening with Half-Life 2 right now .
with "all" games i menth the games I play counterstrike 1.6 colin McRea 3.0 nolf2 soldier of fortune 2 etc... i use wineX i admid sometimes you have to work with it hours to get something at work but when i does i'm really happy at this point i did not have a game that does not work (sometimes multiplayer wont work) but it will not take long when gameproducers realise that linux is a good platform to then they will support linux to so in a few years (1-2) no more problems and if you do not get a game to work go to: gentoo
Microsoft is not bad and ,most important thing, has the right economic alliances and no real competitors. Linux is a good experiment but it's build on a junk philosophy.
yeah, some developers already come with the linux client version in the box (unreal series, etc.), so we're on our way! and correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't winex have a monthly fee or something? what do you mean by a junk pholosophy?
I mean two things: 1 GPL an Open source is not a good way to develop software in my opinion. Making an application requires a lot of time and resources, and these need to be payed in some way. To be truly competitive ,Linux should not be free (i mean Kernel and apps, not the distros) and money gained should be used to pay developers. In this way Linux programmers (who usually develop Linux as an hobby) could have the opportunity to work on Linux as a primary job -> produce better software -> compete with MS. 2 Linux development takes too many people in the world, too many minds that can not be coordinated to work efficently. This results in a huge waste of resources. To sum up, my idea is that Linux should be commercial, sold at a low price and competitive with MS. His development should be carried out by a defined group of programmer who can work toghether producing a better and more user-friendly OS. But Linux philosophy is completely the opposite.
not true microsoft has no commercial knowhow they are stupid (look what they did with netscape) open source is very good because you can bundle you're powers everybody can enjoy the technology (also the poor) you should pay for linux? maybe but honelstly that doesnt make much difference because their are many programmers that work on linux full time linux is much safer you can use it on old systems etc... so LINUX rocks microsoft STINKS
Linux is not safer. Once you have the source code it's easier to found bugs and vulnerabilities! If you take a look at linuxtoday.com you can find nearly daily vulnerabilities. Hackers simply don't attack linux as they don't have much interest and visibility on it. And yeah, linux can be used on older systems.
But seeing as the source code is freely available you don't have to wait ages before the bug is acknowledged, let alone patched. Security through obscurity is hardly a good way to keep your system safe.
I quite like Win XP, but the one thing that really annoys me about Microsoft OS's is the amount of rubbish installed and turned on to begin with. I think they should have an advanced install option like some Linux distro's have where you can select what you want. As for Linux, I just wish it was more widely supported like Windows is as I'm really starting to like it.
i'm starting to like my windows xp after i disabled half the extra crap in it and used a ****load of extra apps. After i used bootvis the thing starts up much faster too. After i tweaked with tweakui it worked better. But in the end, it's still crap. Microsoft blows cause you have to pay 100 of bucks for every machine and your data ain't secure and they can all see exactly what you're doing on you comp, and linux blows until you can use it for multiplayer gaming. All in all linux is starting to look like the lesser of the two evils. So can you for example play bf42 or max payne2 on some linux microsoft emulator? Without DX9.0, how many games will work, and what kind of driver support is available for linux?
i know both ati and nvidia have driver support for linux, but ati's is suppose to be just plain crap. however, nvidia's is suppose to be excellent (as good as their support for windows i hear). there's a program for linux called wine that emulates windows so you can run win apps in linux. there's a version of wine called winex for directx applications, such as-you guessed it-games. it's a great project (winex that is) but it'd still be better if the games ran natively in linux in the first place (which is starting to happen some, but not full-scale just yet )
