Don't judge it by the title but the Phantom , that games console that never was and was supposed to change the landscape of gaming by giving us downloadable content? No I don't either, but there's an article up on Arstechnica about the company and how it went from console to keyboard prototype over 6 years and how it's lost over $78 million... Pretty funny, and depressing at the same time... Poor old phantom
Suck in investors, don't do much development and pay the execs large salaries... Good company to be an exec in!
Well, no, not really, the CEO might be indited and banned from running a public company for five years... so actually.... nice vacation to spend the money he earned... wow, sure would of been fun to be an exec in that company...
Mind you to be realistic. With the hardware changes that happen everymonth, can there really be a PC console. just look at the spec of this thing, Im sure alot of people will be very disapointed with one of these at christmas to find they could not play any games the have been out in the last 6 months or year even. It would not run BF2 or Supreme Comander or even Call of Duty 3. As of May 2004, The Phantom's proposed hardware specifications were: CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Video card: Nvidia GeForce FX 5700 Ultra, with 128 MB RAM RAM: 256 MB Hard drive: 80 GB "content cache" Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio Control: Custom game pad and keyboard-mouse combination unit called a "lapboard". Wireless modules will be used to support a wireless lapboard and game pad.
Just seen a demo vid of the Phantom which states its 3Ghz 100GB hard disk NVIDIA VGA and 7.1 Sound etc. Are you sure its dead??? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6KIHqLQri0
From looking at the website, it appears as though you now download the games to your Windows XP machine, then the lapboard is just a keyboard which looks fancy. Their store doesn't work, I can't find any cache for it eithe.r
