I guess the Pump runs off a 12V feed or something internally.. and as most people don't have molexes in their aquariums they need a normal plug to hook it up to.

Without looking at the specs on my pump (at home) I couldn't say, but it's probably pretty simple for them to do.

Obviously though, this isn't a submersible pump anymore An sealed extension cable could take care of that I guess.

 

but the original pump required ac current, and apparenly the pump fuctions as well as the original 230v pump!

Well it's not a mod as such, according to the article it's been developed with Eheim.

Most things which take 240V AC in rarely need them.. it's much the same as powering something like a 5v hub from your internal PSU.

 

Either they used a 12V motor or (more likely) put a transformer inside the pump.
