Ok, so im confused. Im planning to move my bedroom downstairs - along with my shuttle xpc. However my internet connection is from a wall socket upstairs and must stay there - along with the upstairs pc. At the moment the internet is directly connected to the upstairs (mesh) pc by USB, then the connection is shared over a 100 network (wired)

As im going downstairs and its impossible to run a lead down there, im needing to go wireless... also a router of some kind would negate the need for the upstairs mesh pc to be powered on to get my internet!

So I goto ebuyer and get very confused at what I need... I just dunno what I need to buy, my current alcatel usb adsl modem doesnt have an rj45 network socket, just the usb-out, so i guess the wireless hub/router/thing needs to incorporate an adsl box too?

Im looking to do this is cheap as poss while giving me:
    wireless connection to pc downstairs
always on internet (where the mesh doesnt need to be switched on)
    did I say cheap?

    Cheers for any help!

    Thanks,
    Ben

You wouldn't need to use the USB modem if you got a router as most (if not all) routers have a modem built in. So you'd just connect the router's ADSL port to the phone jack in the wall and plug (or wirelessly connect) all the machines to the router. You can get them fairly cheap nowadays, and a lot come with a built in hardware firewall.

Can you suggest a cheap router that does what I want it to then? Pref from ebuyer... or similar.

Its just I looked at the linksys and stuff and some of the reviews suggest that you need a adsl modem to make it work :| I really dont find it that clear. I understand in my head what I need to make it work, not the actual model of router that I need.

All of these will do the trick (Although the 1 port ones will need an extra switch so probably best to go for a 4 port one)

They dont broadcast wirelessy though? SO i'd need some kind of wireless unit to plug into that as well

I guessed that i'd be able to get a box that grabs my adsl connection, and then wirelessly networks a few computers and shares the connection... no?

(thanks for your help by the way!)

Ok i'd got to this page before... and upon reading the reviews most of them that seem advertised as wireless broadband routers apparently dont have the modem built in :eyebrow:

Going through most of them the reviews say that they dont have the modem built in... argh how annoying. I guess i'll just have to scan through all of them then, thanks anyway!

Once ive found the wireless router then, I guess I just need a USB wireless thingummy for the shuttle, and I connect the Mesh straight in via rj45 upstairs... no?

dont no if ya found any yet but to help you on your way here are a few models you can use

    Netgear DG834GT or DG834G
    dlink DSL-G604T

what you need to be looking for is a wireless ADSL router instead of a wireless broadband router.

Stay away from the Linksys WAG54G, the wireless connection is well known for its instability (I found this out the hard way :grr: )

I'm happy with my replacement though, the D-Link G604T as ^ mentioned.
