I'm converting. No more windows for me, I'm downloading Linux again. I say again, because I've had linux on dual-boot with windows before, but I've never actually had it as a main operating system. I never really wanted to have linux before because I was forever playing games, etc. But now I'm getting a new system, this one can have linux installed on it. I'm downloading as I type, so wish me luck..I don't know too much about Linux, but I'll learn quick. I'm downloading Linspire [formerly known as Lindows] as I get it free (due to being signed up to deviantart when the offer was on ). Last time I had it it was fine, but it still seemed like a limited 'trial' version (see CNR). Can people give me some reccomendations for other free Linux OSes/tell me that Linspire is A-OK? Which would you say is the best? Cheers, Ben. [200th post!]
All linux distros are free... you pay to get them on CD with a manual. I've messed around in Redhat 9 a little bit but I haven't used it enough to say it's good or bad.
Linspire isnt free ;..it charges you for a license, and $10 for box/cd/manual IIRC (wouldn't know, I got mine legitimately free). I've tried Redhat but personally found that Linspire was better..
Well then it's not a true linux distro. I think the GPL makes it illegal to charge for the software although I'm not sure, I just know that every distro I've seen is free.
linspire is a worthless peice of junk for just a normal easy to setup distro go with mandrake, fedora, suse, or debian if you want to learn alot more about linux i would suggest slackware and especially gentoo
The GPL actually says you can essentially do what you want with the software, as long as you give full access to the source code. You could download Debian (free), burn it to CD and charge £200 if you like. Personally I think Linspire seems to be an average-to-good distro for a linux noob, but I disagree with the way they charge for free software (see CNR), that's just taking the p**s. I generally advise new linux users to go for Mandrake (even though I've never used it). Personally I use Mepis (which is based on the great Debian).
