Windows Old Computers knackered, need help!

Right, I've got 2 old computers:
- HP Pavilion 6350
- Compaq Presario 4166 Pentium

Both now with Win2kPro

With the HP, I can't get it to detect the 2nd Hard Drive, and I've tried all the jumper settings, the cables and everything and it still isn't working. Anyone got any ideas, 'cause I'm fresh out!

The Compaq's problem is that it wont detect the PS/2 Mouse at all. This might be a problem with the mobo, which means i'll have to get a USB mouse, or it could be a problem with the OS, as when it loads up, in the Device Manager there is no mouse options at all, and there a problem with a mysterious "Other Device" number 6579.

Please help, I've been stuck for ages with this :S

 

Well i'd say the second HD in the HP machine is totally b0rk3d: try it in another machine.

The Compaq however, you should try installing a USB mouse; or trying to force windows to have the "unknown device 6579" as a PS/2 mouse... If that fails; try a USB one

 

have you tried the second hardrive in another machine to c if it works? try another IDE cable aswel, u might have a broke 1.

 

or try installing a sub-bios for the hard drive.

you can get these from www.maxtor.com and www.seagate.com and will act like a second bios, that forces the hard drive to be detected - as well as it's size. good for motherboards that don't allow hdd's bigger than 30gb.

right, well i got the Compaq computer to work. I found an old serial port mouse i had, and it all works now ^_^

Tried the knackered HD in my computer, and it caused the computer to crash constantly. Part of the reason may have been, I discovered later, was that the PSU had blown in this old computer and nobody could be arsed to repair it (until I came along).

I'll keep trying to fix that damn HD, but thanks 4 ur help everybody, thats just helped me to raise some funds for fresher's week @ Birmingham Uni
