Since this is bit-tech, others may have known it as fatal racing. I've been playing the trackmania: sunrise demo, and it made me think of this game, so I went through my CD collection and found it. I can play the basic game using VDMS, but I was trying to get it running with 3DFX support. I started with what I belive is a glide wrapper I found some time ago. The page claimed that it activated glide that nvidia put in the GF3 after they bought 3DFX. I don't buy that so it's a wrapper But it did work for carmageddon, so I figured I'd try it with whiplash. Well, it didn't run, so I went rumaging through my box of old stuff. I found my old canopus pure 3D and the driver disk (needed the glide2x.ovl), I've put that into the system, and I think it's working (the XP drivcers I found are really flaky, seems most are for voodoo 2 and up. Problem is I scavanged some parts from my voodoo card to save my geforce card, besides which, IIRC the games doen't like voodoo 2 cards). Basically, the game sits at a black screen fora few minutes and then closes with any wrapper I try. I get a few colored specks on the screen with the real deal, but other than that, its the same thing. also tried running it under dosbox which crashes slower, but its the same thing. Anyone have any ideas? Right now I don't have the cash for a DOS box (just graduated, haven't found a job yet) but I think that is what I'll be doing in the very near future. Untill then, I'd like to get this thing running if I can now.
i have that game, i loved it, especially the 3rd hidden track set. Unfotunately, i don't know of much about impoving performance, you could always just install dos as a dual boot system.
I actually went through my old hardware box and fond enough for a basic setup that can run 98SE (so I have some USB support). I found a rendition 2100 PCI card on ebay for a couple of bucks to run the game since the 3DFX build won't run on the pure3d I had around, or the herculese stingray (neither were in the system at the same time) I use to have a Canopus Total 3D which was a verite 1000 card, but I have no idea where that went. I have a voodoo 2 card, but IIRC, I took the 75 ohm SMT resistors off to replace one that had been chiped on my geforce 4 back when it was a good card. I need to poke around my box of electronics parts, look at some old and broke ISA video cards that recently turned up, and radioshack to see if I canfind some 75 ohmers to replace what I took (I think that's all I unsoldered) Eventually, I would like to track down another Pure 3d if I can't figure out where the faceplate went, a Pure 3D II since I really liked the canopus stuff from that era, a Verite 2200 based AGP card, and a Gravis ultrasound. But I don't have the budget right now to go after anything I have seen go infrequently on ebay. They're rare so the prices are high, especailly considering the age of the hardware.
