I'm torn at the moment between Win98 2e, or Xp PRO. I play a lot of old games and just wanted to know if anyones had problems getting old (5yrs?) games to run on XP? I know theres a compatability mode, but someone mentioned that even this doesnt always work. Plus I saw Sam+Max and Day of the tentacle in my local games place and I have the urge to play with a psychotic rabbit.
Thank you for your time and replies- if you leave any. If you dont then :waah:

I don't run XP, but I do run 2000. And since XP is built off of 2000 I figured I would give you my input. :D I run oldish games, Half Life is 5 years old, and for the most part I have no problems. I haven't even had to run in 98 compatibility mode or whatever. But, I have had problems with one game in particular: Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear. I can load the game and go into a mission and all just fine, but the display is jerky and actually shakes when I'm not even moving the mouse, so it's completely unplayable.

Best thing may be to google for the game you are interested in and see if anyone has made any discoveries about being able to play it on 2000 or XP. There may even be patches that you can get for the games you're interested in.

A lot of old games will run on XP, some without compatability mode. Even games like the original Monkey Island are OK.

However not all do. Like Deviate said, Rogue Spear won't, neither will the original Rainbox Six, Beavis & Butt-head Do U, Earthworm Jim or Red Faction. There may well be more, thats just the ones I have come across. Some are a bit touchy, Black & White for example. I can run it on XP, but one of my mates can't run it at all.

Someone should start a "Games that won't run on XP" thread.

Theres always the option of dual-booting 98 and XP.
