I've been having a look at a friend's old laptop (Acer Aspire 9300, AMD Turion 64 MK-38) which according to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Turion_microprocessors
should run at 2.2Ghz, however, CPU-Z and CoreTemp both tell me it runs at only 1.6Ghz, no matter what load i put it under. there are basically no bios options, and no power saving options are enabled as the battery is completely dead anyway. Any ideas?

    Cheers, Charlie

If you look at the entire range it says that they run up to 2.2Ghz depending on the model. The one you got is obviously not one of the faster chips.

nah, its definitely meant to be 2.2, (Turion 64 MK-38 2200 MHz 512 KB 800 MHz 11x 1.15 31 W Socket S1 Q1 2007 TMDMK38HAX4CM) it even says so in the bio's info section. did these chips have any sort of speedstep type function? or could it be thermal throttling? the multiplier is at 8x instead of 11x.
    cheers

I did think about that and then dismissed the idea. It does have a low power feature like most mobile chips that kicks in when it's on the battery. Run prime 95 with it plugged into the mains and see what CPU-z gives for the speed. It could be that this feature needs to be disabled in the bios or at least set up in the power saving features.

It could be one of 2 other things though, CPU-Z is reading the model number wrong and it's a different model or it's just knackered.

This. I own an Acer Ferrari 1000 with a Turion 64 CPU and it runs at a variable speed to save or conserve battery life. On most Acer models, you need to install an application called "Acer Epower Managment" to control the CPU speed of the Turion CPU.

k, thanks will try the software. i haven't put prime95 on it yet but i used a 1080p film to max the processor out. it stayed at 100% load constantly, still at 1.6ghz, both CPU-Z AND CoreTemp showing the same clock, and it only got to 60 degrees, which to me says it should have a bit of headroom. it stays at 1.6 whatever happens.
    Cheers.

ah, the software seems to have fixed it. bit annoying to have to use software, but both CPU-Z and Coretemp show the correct clock speed now. Thanks very much for your help.

No problem, glad you got it sorted :thumb: I've had over 3 years experience in working with both my own and other peoples Acer notebooks :)
