Out of date? the test was less than a year ago...
Sorry if AMD cant even make a CPU that works well on Windows lol.

Hes not paying for unlock, if you look at what i posted its a none K, which means, none unlock.

    And now the silly pictures.

As for AMD making a CPU that works? they did. Windows 7 not supporting it properly? blame the source, Microsoft.

But feel free to continue with your childish behavior. I've come to expect it when trying to talk sense.

Gents, while it is vaguely amusing to see these threads degenerate to mud slinging it is Christmas - the season of goodwill and peace on earth apparently - and it doesn't really help the OP.

I think the main point is that moving from a Q6600 to the current generations of chip from either AMD or Intel will see a significant increase in performance.

Both chips will bring modern games to a playable level coming from a Q6600.

Its horses for courses, both have their pros and cons. The FX stuff are fairly cheap and are a lot of fun.

One thing I do object to is "oh yeah and clock the FX to 5Ghz etc etc".

Overclocking FX chips is quite hard work compared to intel, unless you just want to see throttling.

Not if you do your homework. 8+2 boards have been selling for around £80 new recently :)

My Q6600 at 3.2GHz and GTX460 can still run pretty much everything I want it to at decent settings at 1080p at the moment.

According to passmark, the 6850 is a few hundred points behind a 460, so I'd upgrade the graphics card and maybe the PSU and leave everything else as is. Maybe try upping the CPU OC from 2.7 to around 3GHz.

Otis, before dismissing the 6300 you should have a look around, its an excellent chip for the money. I have two builds coming for customers in January/Feb using that chip. For the money its excellent.

Cheers for all your help guys.
After looking at bits I have to sell, turns out I might have more to spend on this after all.

Thinking about maybe an i7 4770 and a 7870 graphics card. Obviously swap out the psu but this should last a while right?

My "Steambox" is just Windows 8.1 with steam big picture running as the replacement shell.
I don't know how many of the 80+ games I've got on steam will work in Linux, so I'm sticking with Windows.

I think you should get a lower cpu and a higher graphics card. Instead of 4770 go for 4670 and put the difference towards a better graphics card. For now at least sticking with windows for a SteamBox makes the most sense.

7870 is probably fine for 1080p so maybe you could distribute the money a bit differently and get an ssd and stick with 7870

What's the price/performance difference between those chips?

    How would 2x6850's fare against a 7870?

The i7 4770 has hyperthreading and the i5 4670 doesn't. Effectively that means the 4770 appears to have 8 cores (4 physical and 4 logical) compared to the 4 physical cores of the 4670. If you're doing CPU intensive work like rendering or folding that can take advantage of the extra cores you will see an increase in performance.

If it is just for gaming there is no need for an i7. Save the cash and put it into a GPU or SSD
