I'm sorry, I really couldn't decide where to put this post, it fits into several catagories. Mods feel free to move it if you think a different forum section is more appropriate.

I am revising my picture frame PC mod I made, using a better laptop (the one I used crapped out on me) and using wireless internet to get the pictures on rather than with a external CDROM. Only trouble is I don't want to have to put a bevy of protection on it (antivirus, antimalware, etc) because the P2 is already slow enough as it is. It will be running Windows 2000, and I wanted to put on the bare minimum of programs. So, I was wondering if I could set it up on my home network so I could transfer pictures to it without it accessing the internet? Would it matter? Would just being on my secure home network allow it to catch something from one of the other computers or from the internet still without going to any webpages? If I can't do this I will just have to deal with using a USB flash drive or something, but it would be nice to update the pictures without having to take it off the wall. Thanks for the help. :)

If you want to transfer images to your laptop through lan without it having internet all you have to do is filter the ip address of the laptop from having internet on your router settings. (blocks wan access) If you have a linksys router your settings are at 192.168.1.1 no logon, pass is admin. If its dlink its 192.168.0.1 not sure what logon/pass is... just google it, or read manual. Same deal for all routers.

not from the internet. but otherwise yes, assuming they have virii, which you're probably protected against. so it won't really matter if it's on the internet or not

Yeah... i wouldent worry about that mutch... but yes like you said, i strongly advise not to install norton antivirus and other similar software. I recently was asked to make a dell inspiron celeron laptop run faster, computer was terribly slow... well its a piece of garbage to start with, But you have no idea how much getting rid of Norton helps.

And if you dont want internet but still lan, it really is easy to do with a router.

I think that would be the best thing to do, because you really dont need to have internet on a picture frame, just lan... then you can keep it updated hasle free, and have no risk of something happening to it.

Thanks mods for relocating this thread, I forgot about the networking section.

I installed Win2k on the PC (was running ubuntu-not compatable with my wifi card) and installed the card software. I was looking in my linksys router, and I am not sure what to do to keep the PC off the internet. Can someone help me? Thanks.

Don't know about your model specifically, but under the Advanced menu, mine has a Filters section that allows you to deny access to certain IP addresses and services. Use with caution, though... Linksys firmware is pretty buggy.

Thanks, I figured it out, I denied access 24/7 to the one MAC address, so now its on the network but not on the internet. Thanks for the help.
