I looked and couldn't find this - so here it is. I'm going to post it in its' entirety, but it is a little long. Perhaps a short version will make its way to the news articles....

Aside from the stat-twisting (I'm too lazy to retype my digg post), I'm glad to know that he's happy to blame the music industry on this mess. Of course, I've heard that he wouldn't ditch DRM even if the labels let it happen, so I'm taking this letter/article/whatever with a grain of salt until such a time happens.

Still, it would get me a lot closer to buying music from the iTunes store if it happened. The other two things being CD-quality music (out of principle - I can't hear a difference tbh) and money actually making it to the artist, the latter being MUCH more important.

Mr. Jobs is clearly drunk with power these days.

Anyone who thinks this is motivated by anything other than making more money through iTunes is deluded.

He doesn't make money off of iTunes.

Approx $.75 of every song goes to the record lable. (Side note - The record lable gives the artists $.06 and then they say that iTunes needs to raise prices so the artists can get more money.....)
Almost all the rest goes to infrastructure. Shure - iTunes isn't losing money, but no one's getting rich off of it.

Now, I'm not saying that he wrote this letter out of the goodness of his heart, but it's more likely that it was a public response to the lawsuits he's facing in Europe.

Hey, we don't all have money (or space!) for hi-fi systems, and I need something versatile. All of my music comes out of either my iPod or my MBP now anyways (although the analog-out on the Mystique is regarded as pretty high-quality, especially if you replace the DACs). It's all the better for me - I can't watch any video without scrutinizing the quality; I don't need to have the same problem with audio, too.

iTunes, whether it makes money or not (and it will, selling X million tracks a week, and remember plenty of people buy the more profitable albums and not just single tracks) is not really there to provide consumers with music. It's there to promote the continued use of the iPod, which does makes Apple a whole stack of money.
