We are currently using File Magic 5 series (now replaced by Fortis SE) which is a document management application.

It allows us to open a "script" that will scan in documents from our document scanner (meaning it scans a stack of paper a little faster than one sheet per second) and save each one in a specified location with metadata.

It has tons of extra features that we don't need and probably won't use, and our current upgrade costs are looking to be over $7,000 just to get the current version. Ouch!

Are there any open source applications that would make it easy to store and tag data quickly?

    Hey mate,

We use Interwoven's Filesite DMSwhere I work.

We scan and have it email the file (in pdf OCR'd) to the user that ran the scan and then the staff use the outlook integration to save it into the DMS.

Being trying to script it to move it automatically to the DMS or at least to force the staff to save every email but its not that easy.

Is there any advanced features of the scanner that you could use to do email or save the file somewhere automatically and then deal with it or you want no user intervention at all??

Well, as of now we can scan it straight from the document scanner to a folder on the server (It is a USB document scanner that scans nearly 1 document per second very quickly). The goal is to have them fill in a form, press one button, and have it store it based on the form the fill in, as well as store details in a database about it so they can search for it based on various criteria.

    Sorry, got no idea.

Some of the Canon multifuntion devices we can buy over here in AUS have the option of coming with a small dumb terminal that is supposed to interface with all document management systems, so staff can fill it out and hit scan and its done for them.

Sounds like all you need is an advanced capture application. They let you predefine index fields for docs, and you can even use barcode separators to speed up the process. Will automatically setup network folders-file naming schemes. I have put in quite a few of these systems, mostly Kofax Ascent and Psigen PsiCapture. Link below has some others to check out:
