Paint.NET is great, but its not really like Fireworks. Its based on Raster layers wherein the objects become pixels that you manipulate with the edit tools eg if you drop text, you can't reselect it with the text tool, you have to delete the text and add it again.

Fireworks, the last time I used it anyway, was heavily Vector based and could do things such as this.

Having said the above, I exclusively use Paint.NET and its an awesome program. They've also got re-editable text on their roadmap :thumb:

thanks for all the replies - im not sure if i want vector or a raster layer program.

all i need it for is to create a couple of logos, and i suggested something similar to fireworks as i use to use it all the time in school so got to know it (although it is way to expensive for me to buy for myself)

so which program would be best?

oh it has to be able to handle high resolutions.

Logo implies text, and if that will be 99% of your usage, then you will quickly become frustrated without the re-editable text option. It does sound like The GIMP or Inkscape would be good for you, so try both and see how it goes.

The GIMP is basically a free Photoshop, and if you've ever used that, there's an addon which renames and reorders all the menu items to be pretty much identical.

have just downloaded gimp and started to use it but when ever i use the vector line tool (where you click at each point you want and it joins them up with a line) the lines vanish when i change tool etc, how can i get them to stay?
