OK, after finding a guide on making a Wireless Guitar Hero Controller, I thought I would have a go, and put my own spin on it.

First off, I ordered an EMS RF wireless PS2 contoller adaptor. This device turns any PS2 contoller into a wireless pad, or rather, allows the end of the wire to not have to reach the PS2. This is where I went in a different direction.

I then went on to shortening the original wire, so that it could be placed internally, with the device attached. Getting it to fit in is a little tricky, but once its in the right spot the case shuts perfectly.

Next up is to add external power switch, a charging socket and maybe move the charge light externally too.

You maybe wondering, how is this different to the other wireless controllers? Well, I can change back to a wired controller if my battry gets low, or the response time starts to drop due to interferance! All I do, is use a standard cable extender on the the stub of the old cable.

Now what you came here for... EYECANDY!

I have encountered a small problem. or rather, i suspect a problem will rear its ugly head shortly.

When in wired mode, the connection in the shortened part of the wire is put under strain. im trying to think of a way to reconnect it together and take some of the strain off the connection.

I was thinking of putting a cable gland in between the join and the standard PS2 pad connector... this would make the connection internal and place most of the strain on the gland and guitar shell.

    something like this

OR i dont know what im talking about. take your pick.

The first one looks fancy enough to releave some strain on your cables. Something else you could try either in addition to or as a substitute to the gland is to use heat shrink tubing. You can layer the stuff also in decreasing sizes so the end of your makeshift gland will be more flexible than the start where it comes out of your guitar. It is a technique I have used in place of having the right materials to complete some jobs.

    Hope you sort it out.

unfortunatly, due to my lack of foresight, i havent left enough cable to use that top one.

the ones at the bottom would have been perfect, but the cable its made for is like, twice as thick as the cable i need it for.

the cable is 5mm diameter btw.

Can you get us a picture of exactly what it is that you are looking at on your guitar, Maybe there is something we can suggest after seeing exactly what it is your faced with. I for one do not fully grasp what it is that you are looking at.

    here you go

A is the cable, 5mm diameter
B is hole in the case, 7mm wide

on the right, the little thing that holes the cable in place. its actually part of the out sheathing of the cable.

Would it not make sense to enlarge the hole the wire went through so you can use the gland that is already on the cable?

that gland already fits - the problem is the bit i cut is before the gland

i need to make/place a new on after the connection, so the connection is inside the guitar, and the new gland takes the strain.

well after sitting here looking at it... i realised the most obvious solution.

instead of just splicing the wire together, take the original ps2 pad connector an rewire it straight to the shortened cable.

dunno why i didnt think of that in the first place.

    OK, that idea failed.

But now i have another problem.

I have to wire a new pad adaptor on the end, however, the wires inside the new cable are same colours, but are wired to different connectors!

so i opened up the connector for another cable extender (same make) to compare with the wires ive got. i then re-wired the wires to match the new setup. no dice.

    I see 3 scenarios:

    1) bad soldering to the molex connectors im using
    2) each cable extender is wired differently
    3) there is a fault with wire between the guitar mainboard and the connection

if 1 is true, then i just need to get some skills, or a way of testing them.
if 2 is true, there are 393120 possible wire configurations. i need a way to find out if a wire is correctly wired, without them all being right.
if 3 is true, then its new guitar time, or rethink my plan.

EDIT: I've removed the insulation off the outer cable all the way to the mainboard, cant see anything wrong.

    Any suggestions?
