Been lurking around for a while now, reading about some of the cool mods that you guys have done...

I've also known koolvin for a while...

I need some help on getting some unbiased opinions on a new system set-up for me.

here's what im planning on getting :

    -------------------------------------
    P4 2.4G (533mhz) - £180

    Asus P4S333 - £65

    512mb DDR (crucial PC2700) - £100

    GeForce 4 Ti 4200 - £116

    pioneer slot DVD - £40

    LiteOn 48x12x48 CDRW - £50

    ------------------------------------

I also have a Western digital caviar and my trusty old tower case and my 17" TFT (crap make) to go with this set-up.

Please give me comments on compatibility of parts and the prices i have got.

    Cheers,

    Sil:lol:

Well you said unbiased, mine isnt.

Well P4 no! Get an AMD!

The GF4 is a good idera but I would spend another couple of notes and get the Ti 4600 it only costs a bit more so spend a litle more cash.

I'm not hot on Mobos but it an Asus so should be good, still got 2 old Asus mobos and they work, I even found USB pins on them as well, odd there from the old P200 days aswell!

The RAM nice one, where do you get it from, as I myself may purchase some!

DVD and CD-RW are fine! Slot loading things look cool!

You'll have a good system here even if you stick to your original thoughts, good luck!

I definitely would not say don't go Intel, but decide exactly what you want the system for before making your final choice! I also agree about the Graphics Card, have a look around and see if you can get any good deals on a 4400 or 4600 or one of the new ATI cards. If not, then it should do you pretty well all the same, but it is certainly worth looking!

Also be aware of your PSU requirements and plan for the possible eventuality that you may need a new one!

I would go with an Asus PS533 insteaad.

There are newer boards out there though.

Those comments were good, at least they give me some direction to point in...

The RAM is trade price as my dad owns a PC shop in london, but the guys there ONLY recomend AMD, and im not too much of a fan...

The PC will be used as an ADSL server for 8 PC's 24/7 and will be used for lots of graphics work and surfing the net, not much time for games im afraid...

The Ti4400 is about as far as i can stretch, i may see what price i can get the Ti4600 for then...

What price diff. will i be looking at for a P4S533 over a P4S333

    Cheers so far:hip:

if you aint doing many games then maybe you should consider a ti4200. damn good card for less money, and can handle todays games without a problem!

    Personally my choice would be:

Abit BD7-II or IT7-2 MAXX (more expensive but better chipset and more overclocking options than the P4S333)
2.4Ghz P4 Northwood B (or maybe 2.26B if you cant spend as much given the more expensive motherboards above).
    512Mb Samsung PC2700
GeForce 4 Ti4200 (Ti4400 and 4600 are absolute overkill if you're not playing many games)

The CD-RW and DVD drives are both fine.

Or maybe a Radeon 9000 Pro, its 2D output knocks NVidia based cards into the middle of next week. I'm currently viewing this page at 1600x1200 using a Radeon 9000 Pro and a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SB. Rock steady and crystal clear. Perfect for lots of visual work and surfing

Ok, should i go for the abit BD7-2R

It works out at £40 more expensive, is it worth it?

I'm gonna go for the 4200 then...will cost £30 less than 4400, it was my original plan anyway.
Ive had bad experiences with ATI, so im gonna stick to Nvidia, even tho' i respect the new ATI cards are excellent.

Cheers for the help, any more comments, fire away, all are appreciated!:p

I had a really appalling time with ATI cards before now, I mean BAD. I took the plunge, it was what I wanted and I haven't been dissapointed. Great quality output and the drivers seem v stable and fast.
