my mate works there and we have constant talks about PC world and how i think they are a rip off and he dont think that..... im my experience they are just there to sell and not give advice....
Currys/PC World/Dixon's are all the same company, they have been since DSGi LTD. was created. End of the day, it's a highstreet tech shop AIMED at people with lower knowledge of computers than those who sit on a tech forum. A shop has a target audience, high end is NOT what PC World intend to do. You're comparing the milk and the cream here. I guess it's true that insight does come with age.
My PC World-Curry Superdupa Megastore is really bad, they do not know anything about computers or any kind of computer-related tech. Me: Hi where are the CD-RWs? Random employee: have you checked near the fridges? And incredibly lazy, a child was sick in a aisle and they didn't bother cleaning it up for well over 45 minutes (by which time I'd left, might still be there, and yes, I did tell them)
They are fine as long as they are used as they expect to be. I bought my Utgard there as the price was similar to online and I had a voucher that could be used there. Reserved, picked up done deal nice and simple.
I once listerned to a sales person try to convince someone that a 15.4" laptop bag would be ok for a 17". Think the customer was a s ammussed as i was.
Pc World are massively overpriced but what do you expect?? I always do regret never buying the X-fi Elite Pro with the little on the desk unit.... they had them in there like £70 each once i never realized what a deal that was until i looked online they literally had been in pc world for around 6 months the minute i go for one and there all gone... I hate everytime i go in there and they bug you constantly.... then when you need help you can't find any ****er....
In my experience they're nice enough if you assume they don't know as much as you do, and only ask them to check stock levels and prices. I just don't bother with asking them anything more complicated, and do my research before I go to the store. Price wise, they are occasionally cheaper, or a similar price, but you usually have to go into the store to find that out.
I have a Novatech only a five minute walk from me. It's actually the nearest shop to me, so much awesome I can't remember the last time I bought something from PC World. Last time I was in there I saw the price of their HDMI cables and walked straight out.
I think it's because they're not a specialist dealer, still, they can be like bees on you sometimes... Bee safety glasses and bug dremel
Sadly, I don't think you could. I tried, was there for 6 months and I know I couldn't. There is pressure from the very top to sell, sell, sell. Targets this, data capture that, parent and child items too. There is so much emphasis on performance and pushing certain items that the whole experience is just as bad for the staff as it is for you. Please remember when shopping: In the same way that the waiter didn't cook your meal, the salesperson doesn't decide how to run the shop. The people that you complain about and to aren't the ones that deserve either.
Guess where I work after I left the Evil Purple Place? ;-p Like any shop, you get the less technical (Though not, by any standards, PCW's lack of technical ability, if you're that crap, you don't get a job unless you want to be a cashier). What they *Should* have done was get someone that does components to sort your list/advice/parts out. In my shop, it's generally me that get's called for Component advice. The staff are told to ask, then follow and learn from someone that does rather than "wing it", as it's very very obvious that they don't know. As I said, that's what *should* happen.
When I worked there, I pretty much always told people to buy cables/discs etc online, cause ours were overpriced. I even told one customer that Advent PCs were the equivilent of a supermarket own brand, and that for the same money, he could get a decent brand online at ebuyer. Not surprisingly, most customers thought my customer service was excellent.
I'm probably going to go off on a rant here, but stick with me. It's possible some of you already know i work at currys, which has been pointed out is neigh on identical to pc world. You cannot win with customers, there are always some that like to be left alone, some that like to be approached, even have a good chat-and not always about the product. I've had people get quite irate at me for 'taking too long' when i had made eye contact, had them make no signal and assume they were browsing. So yes we will ask how you're getting on, infact we should do it within 5 mins of entering the store. if you don't want any help just say so. Unfortunatly DSGI employs around 40000 people! Many of whom work in the stores, so while i agree some sales staff suck, it would be impossible to get people of yours or my knowledge in every role. But don't tar us all with the same brush, especially when you consider the range of products we have to be knowledgable on, for example my section is pc's but i'll still have to sell a dozen or so washing machines a day. Overpriced add-ons; i see your point, i really do. But there are things to consider, the cables ARE better quality the more you pay, you only have to look at one or see a cross section to see the extra materials etc gone into a more expensive one, is it worth £80? To me probably not, to someone that wants the best of everything? Why not. (note i said quality cable, not picture) Also the margins made on the big buys (tv's making £10 profit) we have to make it up somewhere) Would i recomend them go online to ebuyer? HELL NO, i'm employed by DSGI, i would expect to be kicked out on my arse so fast were i recomending competitors, in any company. So, we're not all terrible, there is a range of add-on prices, some products make us next to nothing competing with online sites so we have to look for profit elsewhere. Do i think we can improve? yes, and that is what's happening. And to finish off, we target a different group to who is probably reading this, because i've been working there over a year and not one 'regular' customer has asked me the TDP of a CPU, completely seperate audience. Sorry if that came across as a rant...
No-one disputes they are better quality. It's when we hear the ******** on how an £80 cable will bring you a better picture people get irate, because it's pure crap. A digital signal cannot be altered whether it's gold plated or not.
It depends on who you ask, there was even a thread on here about it, quite a lot of dispute, personally i use cheap ones, but if someone wants to buy a £100 HDMI lead off me (which they have) i'm damn well not going to stop them, because it's a business.
