I'm playing around with opnsense at the moment, but it seems it's extremely easy to get lost in the settings and change something that messes it up. The only thing I've had success is setting stuff using the wizard and using bridge for a second LAN port. But still a ton of settings I don't understand and I don't think the second LAN port is configured correctly.

The current strangeness is why both LAN ports are at 2500 Mbps according to Windows and NAS software, but file transfers max out at 110 MB/s. I can run an internet speed test and combined maxes out the Windows interface at 160 MB/s so it's definitely linked at correct speed.

Is there any similar gateway/firewall software that is simpler, more like normal router UI but with VLAN support?

Yeah it has a huge learning curve.
I use it at home and like you I have kept it very very basic.
I get 6gbps through a 10gbps connection for some reason...you can use your box as an iperf server too.
That's with a Xeon based system with 32gb of ram.

It's a N3700 mini PC, so may be I had my hopes too high, hoping it would able to act as a 2.5 GbE switch as well as gigabit internet gateway.

    But this doesn't make sense.

    iperf test:
    Code:
Connecting to host 10.0.0.1, port 22817
    [ 5] local 10.0.0.100 port 47312 connected to 10.0.0.1 port 22817

    iperf Done.

    Sometimes 552 Mbits/sec and sometimes in 300's.

It can clearly do faster than gigabit speed. Transfer speed was 135 MB/s when I tested again today (fresh start), and up to 1.96 Gbps when adding internet speedtest.

It's going to be a long time before I put it into proper use..... unless there is simpler open source firewall software?
