I recently won a bit of cash in the lotto and so I am looking to upgrade my processor. I currently have the following in my system:

    Athlon 64 3800+
    A8N-SLI Deluxe
2 GB SDRAM (OCZ DDR400 PC3200 Platinum Dual Channel)

I am interested in what has been said online about overclocking the Opteron 170 processor but have never really done any overclocking in the past. Based on my hardware listed above do you think it would be worth purchasing this CPU for the purpose of overclocking it? Will my motherboard and RAM work well with the potential overclock?

Assuming you only have enough to upgrade the CPU, it should overclock quite well, that is a nice motherboard, and the ram is good to.

    Cash

Yep, only enough for a cpu and I figure it will most likely be the last performance based upgrade I make to this system before replacing the motherboard sometime down the line. I may upgrade the RAM at some point but unless I win the lotto again I doubt it.

Then go for it, its not a Core2Duo, but its not like a clocked Opteron is a bad CPU or anything!
