Hiya - Ive put in a new DVD drive into my PC, connecting it up using a SATA cable.

I was expecting the drive to just be picked up automatically, but its not?

Its got power, and ive checked that the SATA cable is seated happily on both the board and the drive, ive also swapped it to another SATA port on my board.

Is there anything im missing here?! Ive tried this on both XP and W7 32-bit.

Its not found in the BIOS either, so its leading me to think that the cable might be dodgy?

Yes, swap out the cable to make sure.

Is the drive on the same SATA controller as your hard drive(s)? If not, check that actual controller is enabled in BIOS.

I checked the BIOS, and although i cant claim to know 100% what im looking for, all the controllers i could find were enabled.

I didnt have a spare cable, so im going to try and source one from work today and try when im home. Fingers crossed.

Some info on your rig would help, especially motherboard make, model and revision.

One other way to test if you don't have a spare cable and can't get hold of one, could be to move the sata cable you know that works off the hdd to the new dvd drive and leave the hard drive unplugged. Just go into the bios and see if it appears. You could also try this with a dos executable cd like memtest just to see if the dvd drive works. Atleast then you will know if its a drive problem or a bad cable.

There is a possibility that the drive itself is faulty of course. Can you not plug another optical drive into the same SATA port with the same cable? If it works, I suggest that the drive is fubar and a RMA is in order.
