Hi all, this is my first post and first mod, so be gentle with me please! I have a case which i have sprayed ( aerosol ) flourescent orange. Paint is normally used for spraying valves and pipe lines ( kind of Dynorod van colour ). Primered first ( although made he mistake of not roughing the surface up to get a good key ) then painted and finished off with a lacquer coating. Im looking to make it into a Orange box themed case i.e. Half life , Portal etc.. and was wondering if you know of any places i could get decals or suggest other ideas. Can i get orange LED fans? Using blue and a cathode tube inside atm but it doesnt go with the case. The gear inside it is laughable as im waiting to see where i take the mod before moving my main rig into it. Just using a old Compaq presario P3 guts to get an idea of the system up and running. im based in the North East , stockton-on-tees area if that helps reccomending suppliers etc. Just figuring out how to post some pics now. Thanks in advance for your help.
you dont really need to get decals. all you need to do is make a stencil, and use a nice can of spray paint. and yes, you can get orange l.e.d. fans.( i would link, but you are from overseas)
Or just pick some random decent led fans and replace the leds to some orange ones. Ofcourse only if you got the experience in soldering.
Instead of decals or paint you could cut out a window in a Half life theme, put some orange acryl behind it and illuminate the acryl with leds. Regards.
Orange Fans You can try somewhere like Specialtech for Orange fans. They do the AC Ryan Blackfire UV Orange fans plus they do some UV reactive cables for the inside, so....with a nice blacklight in the case... Also plenty of people like Thermaltake, Nexus, Akasa and AC Ryan do Orange fans, they are all freely available online in the UK. You could also do acrylic 5.25" bay with the Portal logo and have the inside of the O clear. Or a nice big side window in the style of a portal...either painted or get the image done onto vinyl and fixed to the acrylic. Just remember to post lots of pics of whatever you do... HAPPY MODDING!!
thanks for the responses folks, liking the ideas very much. Im currently pulling all the keys out of my keyboard so i can spray that up too. ( what a painfully slow task that is! ) Think a trip down B&Q is in order tomorrow to get me self a dremmel, see what damage i can do with that! The right hand side of the pc is just a mass of orange atm so a real nice picture featuring the orange box titles would be good but my artistic side is non existant, im more of a pull it apart and tinker modder. I was wanting the Aperture labs logo cut from acrylic and stuck to the case so i stands proud. Any links to companies that could cut it for me? Ill certainly get the ball rolling with the orange leds and fans. This is the case im using, just imaging all the main body of the case is now flourescent orange http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=37416&doy=26m1 The digi thermometer is gone and theres two dvd drives installed, i have 2 more 5 1/4" bays to use and 2 21/2" bays. DVD drawers ill paint also orange. If your familiar with portal i was thinking of maybe having two portals on the case with the stick man entering one and exiting the other but kind of stumped how i can achieve this effect. ok trying to organize photos try this link http://www.flickr.com/photos/beekids/2221190050/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/beekids/sets/72157603796696992/
Put in a blue led fan at the top, and a orange/red led fan in the side and make Chell jumping in to one fan and coming out the other fan.
Hello all, A question on leds please. the hard drive and power leds that come from the motherboard to the front of the pc are they 5v or 12v ? I purchased some and was advised to put a resistor in as they are only 2v ( i think ) so the retailer supplied the resistors on the information being 5v. Next question is the leds have a long and short wire, my wires heading to the current green leds are coloured on one - blue and black, on the other - yellow and white. which wire would the resistor go on and long/short wire of the new orange led attach to. ( also will i do any serious damage if i get it wrong? its only a cheapo mobo but dont really wanna fry anything as im a yorkshireman and hate parting with money )
The LEDs for the motherboard and hardrive activity that plug into the motherboard already have resistors on the board. It's just a straight LED swap. Inside the head of the LED is 2 contacts. one is big, the other is small. The small one is the positive. You should be able to match them up by looking at this part. The LED won't be damaged if it's wired backwards. If the LED doesn't work, flip the connector on the motherboard.
thats grand , giving it a twirl now cheers Spot on thanks for the advice, just bared the connectors on the existing and tried it, works a treat. Any ideas how many leds that one feed will power? Or will i need to know what output is on that particular connection. Ill be using HDD activity and Power ( constant )
Ok just an update on where im at so far, Still in the dark ( no pun intended ) on how many leds i can run of the HDD and power supply leds that are already coming off the motherboard header, Will it be different dependant on mobo, if so ill delve into compaqs archives for a manual as its a relic of a system im practising on. Ive had some info from a company that will provide me with some decals ( £20 for 4 around 250x150mm ) Am i allowed to use images from Valve or steams websites, or would i have to create my own? Dont really want to infringe any copyright laws, not that anyone other than my kids and family will be looking at it. I did fire a email to Valves PR dept but they havent responded. Mentioned i would be putting a work log on here as a bit of publicity. One more question if i havent bored you to tears already is im cutting a window in the casing- Is a dremmel cutting disc up to the task or something more substantial? Made the foolish mistake of painting already but wont matter as i can get more if the cut goes wrong.
