Orange Is Cutting My Connection to 56K

Orange is Cutting my Connection to 56K cos i bit torrent, yes but i bit torrent files between my friends, Videos from uni etc. All non copyrighted as we produced them...

What should i say to them

 

cancel and goto someone else? call and complain. They shouldn't be allowed to cut you down like that. I bet they still expect you to pay full price dont they?

 

But they don't know that, do they. Therein lies the problem

They are simply trying to cover themselves - also looks like you are up against a 'fair use' policy.

 

hmmm i'm only using 28kb/s capped down and 10 up and i've a 16 meg connection so it's hardly anything

 

Ring 'em up and explain the situation. Ask them about your usage, and how it contravenes the "fair-usage" policy, and why, when you pay for 16Mb broadband, you should put up with a ridiculously low speed without (I'm assuming) any warning.

If they refuse to sort it, see if they'll let you out of your contract, and find a decent broadband supplier. There's a reason they came bottom in most customer satisfaction surveys these last couple of years.

don't use your peer to peer between 6pm and midnight.

I expect your service will resume normally at some point, at longest a month (ring them talk to to, it may be shortened).

If you are outside your contract period, threaten to switch providers, they will probably upcap the service with a don't do it again warning.

If your going to switch, you'll need a MAC code from orange, if they refuse (they're not allowed to refuse) threaten them with OFCOM. If you are still in a contract with orange, you may have to pay a service cancellation fee before they will give you the code.

I'd suggest switching to a better provider, preferable one without a fair use policy.

 

tell them to swivel on it? TBH u r using a cheap and nasty isp & as in most things you get what you pay for - though in this case you don't get what you pay for!

far better for serious net users is someone like http://www.ukfsn.org/cgi-bin/migrate.cgi you get 30gb peak / 300gb offpeak.

They're not worth your time if they're cutting you off for torrenting at a cap of 28kbps.

That's really weird, I'm on orange, and I torrent all the time. (Ususally 500kb down and 40kb up)
They told me that I was abusing their fair usage policy, and after ringing them and telling them the definition of UNLIMITED downloads, they soon left me alone.
I say call them up and get pissy. If they still insist on capping you, then switch isp's

 

join O2, we're ace. Worked for orange now work for O2. The broadband is one of the reasons I left, couldn't sell a product i didn't believe in.

 

Virgin media, i find, has been excellent, they explain their fair use policy brilliantly, its a 1.3 GB limit from 3pm till 9pm each day, but then its completely limitless 10mb/s internet overnight, and i can get a couple of 1080p movies done overnight.

The only thing to remember is to limit the streaming videos during the day

 

You got what you paid for.. ie. a crappy ISP for peanuts to go with your mobile phone contract.

Do people not research their purchases these days ? Orange has been slated as a broadband provider ever since they launched their service. I think it may have even made its way onto Watchdog (UK TV show about fraudulent companies) at some point. Add Sky and other 'discount' broadband providers to the list too. They seem OK if you surf webpages, but try games or bittorrent and its a duff deal.

In essence.. you get what you pay for. Go to a proper ISP. PC PRO magazine's customer survey (ie paying clients) puts Zen internet on top year on year. But others are good as well.

What about excessive network usage?

If it’s felt that any Be member’s Internet activities are so excessive that other members are detrimentally affected, Be may give the member generating the excessive web traffic a written warning (by email or otherwise). In extreme circumstances, should the levels of activity not immediately decrease after the warning, Be may terminate that member’s services.


Define excessive.... no way near as bad as most though. But there is still one there...
