Sorry if this has been done before, I had a search and couldn't find anything. I'm just wondering what the failure rate of the original xbox 360 is (20gb/before the HDMI port was added). I'm asking this as mine has just given me the ol' red ring of death (3 red segments), and pretty much everyone I know who had an original machine has had to send it back for repair for one reason or another. Please only do the poll if you have/had a 360 before they added the HDMI port.
I still have my first premium console. I picked through a pile of them looking for a certain team & lot #. At the time that team & lot didn't have any reports of the RROD.
My original launch unit lasted until christmas year before last before it RROD. Replacement motherboard died a few months ago (out of warrenty). I now have an elite, but I intend to try and repair my original unit for my nephew to use at some point.
I've fixed RROD before. But as far as it goes, the 1st gen 360s have quite a bit of failures. That said, I did decide to rip off the old heatsinks and put in different with better fans. It's basically a mobo in a box now.
Cunning Mine did ok, it died with 2 months left of the 3 year RROD waranty I think when I get it back/replaced I'll sell it and get an elite, mostly for the quiet DVD and 120gb hdd (but also for the sexy colour)
My 1st Gen '360 died about 4 months ago.. .RROD. Picked up a cheap second hand 1st gen one with some games as a replacement. Tried fixing the original one, but to no avail. That's x-clamp and heat gun that failed me.
Mine died after a month. I got it back and it died again within a weekend. After that they gave me a brand new one with the updated heatsinks that lasted 'till earlier this year.
The funny thing is, even with this appalling failure rate, I'd still rather have a 360 than a PS3, and I'm not even an MS fanboy, in fact my last 3 consoles before my 360 were playstations.
I'm on my third console - put it that way! Gamestation have been great about it though - always replacing.
not had a RROD so far (touch wood) but the network port did suddenly stop working and had to be sent in for repair
Original one purchased on release, died a year later. I sold it pre-fixed and bought the elite when it was released, no problems since.
My 20GB died after 18 months. My current 60GB is coming upto 12 months, I hope it lats a few years as I dont plan on replacing it again in a hurry.
Just got my replacement, annoyingly they replaced it with one the same, ie: no hdmi and uber-loud dvd, but at least I got a working unit agian
Mine has just RROD'd again (second time). Really quite annoyed actually to the point where I'm actively considering going for a PS3.
My xbox 360 elite has just had the E74 error!! gah so annoyed! I was playing Modern Warfare 2 yesterday night and suddenly the graphcis went hazy and I could tell something was wrong....I tried it this morning briefly and it seemed to be working...then I try it when im home from errands and its died completely with an error message E74 asking me to contact xbox support. I have issued a ticket online and it states its going to send me an email with details on where to send it but I havnt recieved the email yet! Does it take long to recieve this email? also how quick are they with sending it back?
360 bought at launch. Power supply started making grinding noises within a week, so was sent back for replacement. It then froze randomly during play for about 8 months before RRODing. Kept the replacement for a while but didn't want to risk using it, so I sold it. Bought a PS3 and never looked back.
