lol yeah at least you know what a schwa was.. I thought it was kids slang for sure

that's the way I felt burnout.. but in finland I guess they get it paid :D remember a couple of times having talks with other students about complaining to the dean when we felt the school was holding back on equipment in the labs.. student loans are still 6-7% here

Uni's like the churn before you Level-Up. I failed my first year at Uni as I was too busy getting high or drinking heavily to go to a Maths course which I hated. I went back the next year and did business which was far more enjoyable.

I can only agree with you that starter courses suck. I am at first year in high school, and all of the 11 classes starting this year, has got "general starting course" until after Christmas. All the stuff that we learn was covered by my school teachers and I find myself reading bit-tech and doing other stuff. And it really doesn't help that I know that I will be changing classes at winter. From a Society/English based line to Math/Physics line.

I was, I couldn't give a **** all through school, college and uni.

Now I work 7 days a week and it's awesome to be motivated, just bought an awesome car and life is sweet :D

I suppose that's the kinda stuff that motivates me to study as well... One person in our family couldn't give a shait about the college, but suddenly found his motivation in polytechnic and now he's doing great. I just need to find that motivation to get the good grades and make the couple of good connections...

Also I finally decided that I'm NOT going to find the motivation from the bottom of a bottle. That's over now.

the bottom of a bottle is tempting tho, if only as a cure for boredom.........

i sorta have an ongoing problem with it that borders on habitual, but is mostly social. i think if you can see the possibility of a problem though you'll always be on the right side of the fence

It just seems pretty hard not to drink sometimes when it's a new city and I hardly know anyone from outside the school... So I just go to the events/partys at school and they just seem to always end being "that one beer too wet".

Ok I've been thinking, and my main (possibly only, as well) problem is mathematics. I just can't do **** on the lessons/lectures and that sorta kinda brings the mood down. If I can't do maths then I'll never pass the exams and never... well never get anything done in the school.

I just lost it about mid-way through college and gave up then, grades went belly-up and I have no clue of so many things they now expect everyone to know :( Well whattahell, can't blame anyone but myself for that and I guess I just really took a piss at my own cereal then. Now it would/will be hard as hell to come back and quite likely I'm still going to fail plenty of exams even if I really started to study and started the catching-up straight away.

Anyway the overall mood isn't quite as bad as it was a couple of weeks back. Atleast I have some stuff to do as well as look forward to. Again thanks everyone.

The key to mathematics is to visualize the algorithms on top of memorizing them. We didn't evolve in The Matrix™, we evolved to solve real world problems through spacial-temporal reasoning (it's why bit-tech benchmarks use barcharts). Do that and maths is cracked open.

Moro. Onhan täällä jonku verran suomalaiset kyllä!

Well speaking from experience regarding motivation, I hear you loud and clear.

Used to be a good student in High-school, got top grades for the fist 2 years, 3rd went quite well, then motivation dropped since I had it easy enough. I moved up into the honours levels of subjects and started to arse about and not focus on what I was doing. Everything suffered. Maths especially. I was great at them, but I never focused enough. In order to get into university, I had to have honours level maths, even a basic pass to get in. The day of my exam, my teacher told me "Don't do honours, do ordinary, I wouldn't want to see you fail". I did honours, passed. Told him to go f**k himself at our graduation ceremony when he broached the topic.

I got into Uni into a course I did not expect. General Science. I had medicine as my first choice since I had wild aspirations of doing surgery. General science was the best thing that ever happened to me. Broad range of subjects available, some mandatory, such as maths. 1st year, I was mostly drunk, but could crap like you wouldn't believe in the week before the exams. I failed summer exams in both 1st and 2nd year. I passed them though in the autumn each time with the repeats. 3rd year came, I dropped everything except Zoology. Got to pick my subjects and I chose those that I found interesting and others that would complement the course work elsewhere.

Made it through 3rd year first time around (only way, otherwise it's over). Got into 4th year and specialized and was even allowed to design my own thesis title while the others were handed theirs with little or no choice. I came out of it all with a 2nd class honours degree. Best series of years in my life.

Math was always my problem though since High-school. Best way around it? Sit down with some friends, resist the temptation for boozing it up and just go through the old exams that have been done before. Sit down for a few hours when you can, go through the motions, if you can find a whiteboard, even better, write everything out that you need to.

It can be really damn hard I know, but with some help from your friends, who are always easier to listen to and approach with questions, you can DEFINATELY get over it.

The key thing to getting motivation for anything is to do either something you enjoy, or to have a goal. Coasting is boring, easy, no hassle, but boring. A bit of a challenge always makes it more rewarding.

I'm from Ireland, but half-finnish. I went to the army in finland by choice to see what I could do. I came out a sergeant, National Championship shooter, Best Squad leader award, translator, few other merits. I did that in between university and where I am now. I am currently doing an Environmental engineering PhD in Edinburgh, but based in waterford. Again, a thesis of my making. I don't like the people I work with, government departments don't like my subject matter as it could save people millions of euro and take that money away from lucrative, out-dated methods, I have no motivation at the moment, but f**k me I am going to get this done. Why? Because people thought I never could....
This is to prove them wrong and see what I am made of again.

Sisu.

I had no motivation from about 2nd year in secondary school when I realised I could come top in my class (mostly made up of farmers who couldn't give a toss) simply be remembering what I could from class. No revision required.

This lasted til I wasted two years in uni doing something I didn't enjoy and came out the far side of with nothing to show for it.

I picked a new course in something I was interested in and just had the best two years of my life.

Personally I found the lack of a load of decent friends in the first course really didn't help...days I didn't want to go to a particular class I had no other reason to go in. 2nd time round there only were about 30 of us who (mostly) got on extremely well, gave me a reason to crawl out of bed a lot of mornings.

My advice is pick something you enjoy being good at. It might take a while to figure out what that is but there's no rush, you've got the rest of your life to get a job :thumb:

University is about self motivation: it's what employers look for. It's not so much about the course you did, although that can feature depending on what job you get, it's the fact you stuck it out and went to class and did exams. It means you will go to work and stick out a tough job so it's worth them employing you.

If you genuinely hate it and it won't get better do something else, because why bother putting yourself through it to come out with something you don't want.

I did four years of Chemistry and found ~50% of it interesting and didnt make friends until the 3rd year. The only reason I really stuck with it because I was very good at that 50% and good enough to pass the others. I clearly don't do Chemistry now though :p however that's not to say it hasn't benefited me a lot.

    People hating uni?

I absolutly LOVED my time at uni, first few weeks were a bit of a chore (making firends etc) but after that i had a whale of a time.
The course was fantastic, sure it had times when we were over-worked, but the key word is "WE" here. Once your in the same boat* you get on with it and overcome the problems. I was with good room mates that i stuck with for the full 3 years of my course and it was even better that they were all doing somthing different from me. It gave me perspective that no matter how stressed out i was, they had their own problems (even if they were "ONLY" doing a an BA or BSc  )

    * Boat as i did a BEng in Marine Technology with Hons in Offshore Engineering. Shame im working in Saudi now drilling holes in the earth, i miss the ocean!

I will put both hands up to being an unmotivated student.

Im almost half way though my 4th year (scotland) and still have trouble motivating myself. Admittedly this is because i've always been a slacker and a coaster and tbh I'm comfortable with that. I'm on track for my 2:1 (although havn't decided on a disertation title yet) which is all I was ever after and i've had a really bloody good time. A certain lack of motivation isn't all bad as long as you're there for the right reasons. I may not be giving this my all but I know that being a graduate in posession of a 2:1 is a good thing and will help me in whatever career i happen to find myself in when i'm done.

Also as one of the earlier posters said, being a "smoker" is definitely not good for your motivation but you can be as motivated as you want but it wont help if you're crippled by a hangover 4 days a week.

So just enjoy it. If you're only in your first year it doesn't count anyway (at least it doesn't here) so just do what you need to do to pass.

I'm aware these comments may not have been hugely constructive but i thought i'd chip in

Tbh 1st year may not count, but unless you're doing an easy degree, if you miss first year then the second is going to be damn hard.

I used to be just like you. I couldn't work on anything that I wasn't remotely interested in.

My life took a completely turn for the good when I started studying I was completely and uterally PASSIONATE about, aviation.

Just surround yourself with things you like, remind yourself of what you want to achieve, have fun in the process. Basically work hard, play hard, enjoy your life and you should feel refreshed enough to study. Hope that helped. :thumb:
