I'm working on a helpdesk at the moment that supports 7000+ seats. There were only three of use there today and even fully staffed we only number five and a half...

I logged 70+ calls today and must have answered 150+

It's kinda cool though sorting peoples machines out remotely as they gush in wonder on the phone because their mouse pointer moves without them having to lift a finger.

Anyone else out there being hammered in the world of IT?

I wish I was! I got out of the Army and been looking for work in the IT field (that's what my Army job was). I want to work overseas. Any pointers on my job hunt?

Not anymore :D I worked a Help Desk for many years in the late 80's through the mid 90's. Got out of that and went into Network support and eventually being a webmaster. Phew...

Indeed, we have a 3 week backlog of jobs at the moment. 700 PC's (and growing) and only three of us...

Lets just say that I ****ing HATE engineers who sleep in and manage to push an entire project 32 days overdue leaving you to stress out and pull your hair out trying to get those days back.

Well I am trying, at the moment getting a job as a software developer is rather tricky :) I could work in support, but my business does that anyway and frankly it is somewhat dull.

"I have been told I have 16 and need 64. What 64 can you recommend?"

I get quite a few people simply emailing me or ringing me to get free technical support

I got into the IT the back way - on to an IT management graduate scheme. As part of this i'm doing 6 months in each area: Helpdesk, desktop support, network support, web developmet, etc...

My best advice would be to send off CVs on spec to any company that's big enough to be likely to have an IT dept cause loads of jobs never even get advertised...

Also you need to make sure you've got a CV that's not too long and pushes your experience > skills > relavent qualifications. Not your address, marital stauts and a bunch of old unrelated exam results.

Atomic - Is that three of you to totally support 700 machines? What sort of network does your place run?

Dad - I'm going to be doing a stint in network support but they're even more over worked than the helpdesk...

yeah. Do you use VNC? Because VNC is lurvlay. I would love to be able to use VNC on customer machines. But of course we mainly deal with dialup customers :(

sadly.. I am kind of unbaklogged... cut down to 3 days a week :(
I could take a few computers on if anyone wants... as long as I get paid ;)
Lately, I have been gettin me post count up here on bit-tech cuz nothin else to do.

VNC? To remote control we use something called SMS I believe it was written in-house as the prevous off the shel product was crap.

I've only been there 2 months and getting you head round supporting 350= applications is a bit of a mind bender...

no kidding.. 350 huh.. that is a LOT.
I heard of SMS before.. duno anything about it though. So do you guys support everything on a computer?

btw, VNC is at www.realvnc.com The viewer and server is free. Also, you don't need to have a viewer, just a web browser that supports java.

Well, first line anyway. There's also an element of second line. It's a mission when there's calls queuing, and you have to decide if it something you can sort out or whether you need to asign it to someone and decide which department it needs to go to.

I can't understand how you IT support peeps can have so much patience with all those stupid people phoning up. I used to think evertyone knew at least what a harddrive was.. maybe not..

lol the IT peeps in the school my mum works at are so underworked.. about 4/5 of em and they do bugger all mostly, telling jokes and pissing about.. sounds like fun :D.

It pretty much is. And the truth is I CAN'T STAND HOW STUPID SOME PEOPLE ARE!!! But if I think about it, they never grew up with computers. Kinda like how I don't car what is wrong with my car. As long as it is working and not costing money and sounds fine.

But yeah, I tell some people EXACTLY were to go, and they do something else. Like wtf, I told you to do this, and you did that. Don't worry, I don't snap at people, although I'd sure enjoy to ;)
I alos feel sad that the majority of humans have an IQ less than about 90 something. Really sad IMO.

I work at a University. Yep, just the three of us, we look after all PC Support (excluding networking) in my school - new hardware, upgrades, repairs, purchasing, printers etc.

Cos the easy calls are a nice break from people complaining about other (harder) queries :p
