I just bought new Sparkle 9800GT 1GB for folding and straight out of the box I seem to run into a problem. On full use: 117 degrees. Any ideas?

heat sink not correctly attached, my 1-2 of my 9800GX2 was like that (had water cooling on it before last owner forgot to put a lot of the screws in)

I suggest to use a different temperature monitoring program.. try Everest (trial version should do it). At 110C your GPU is supposed to shut down or crash your drivers.. so clearly, what you are using is not reading the temperature correctly.

Tried Speedfan and EVGA Precision, all showing the same. Tried Everest - same thing. I'm gonna return this darn thing in the morning.
Weird thing it didn't crash though. I know it was overheating because after 2 hours my room had this distinctive smell of near burning computer parts :)

The GPU emergency shut-down is probably broken, and the heatsink is broken as well.. in other words, a completely broken GPU.

Thanks guys. Waiting for a replacement now. By the way, how much PPD can I expect from 9800GT?

Around 3500 to 5000 ppd depending on the work unit if it is not overclocked.
