I think the swiftech block should have had more pins around the outside and less in the middle. Looking at the pictures of it it looks like there is a higher concentration of pins in the middle of the block which is where the deadzone from the fan will be. The higher concentration of pins in the middle means it will be the hottest point. :duh:

But general turbulance means air does get round them, or if all the air is pushed out a vacuum exists. Either way, having more pins over the core is surely better?

Perfectly timed article :) You have to give all those coolers back or ..?

If you think about it long enough you could probably argue that it's best the swiftech had no pins at all! It's one of those things which needs some physics and a lot of computing power to simulate and I'm lead to believe that's what swiftech did, they're certainly proud enough of their pin density distribution and layout enough to patent the design (which aint cheap) :)

Great review, worth reading even if u don't have a p4.

Really amazed by that silent tower performance but the heatsink retention looks dodgy, are there any springs to prevent u crushing the core? looks like good 'ol nuts and bolts to me :wallbash:

Yeah it's a shame you can't have everything in one package - TT's sink isn't cheap and it's mounting system is really bad (especially if you need to get to your processor semi-regularly) :(

As for springs... no there are none, but crushing a P4's core through it's heat spreader, well I've never heard of it happening...

Youd break the mobo before you cracked the processor.
Is it just water that was in the heatpipes? And it just evaporated?

Damn swiftechs are soo damn nice, yet, including delivery they are £53 :eeek:

What happens when you turn around the fan on the kamakazie?

I just wonder whether the Switech would work better with some sort of ducting to move the fan away a bit.

No I doubt they'd put water in the heat pipes, but I didn't see anything at all come out when I put holes in the silent tower - whatever was in there probably wasn't a liquid at RTP.

Your second q, what happens if I turn the fan so it blows on to the Samurai instead of sucking off it? I don't know, might be worth testing but I'd guess Scythe already have and put it that way around for a reason - there were quite a few more things I wouldn't've minded doing with these sinks but unfortunately it all takes a lot of time - the review already clocked up 18 pages, doubt anyone would read it if I went on for much longer ;)

1337modderman - I can't really comment on your question I'm afraid, I've only tested this one version of the 3D-Cooler, maybe we'll test the other before too long :)

    Cheers guys,

    Rob.

it'll be something requiring high energy for phase change, probably something similar to a refrigeration system, maybe cfc's or something tasty like that :Q

    Because they work

I like the sound of that Thermaltake, but what happens when you mount it is a tower? It's very high = lotta torque on mobo :wallbash:

I know!! I remember the last TT review here contained a phrase somewhat like "I would never buy a thermaltake product".

Worse still, after proving how amazing it was you cut holes in it :waah: :hehe:

i always worry about these huge copper coolers like the TT one reviewed here. They're so heavy i'm amazed the poxy little P4 bracket, let alone the PCB can actually hold them! I've heard of people, especially Socket A mobo users, who have ripped the whole ZIF socket of because they were using a huge HSF like a Zalman CNPS7000cu, Gigabyte 3D cooler ultra (the all copper version of the HSF review here) and one of those Thermalrite

I dont fancy using a HSF that exceeds the manafacturers spec by too much. As it is i remove my TT Silent Boost if i'm transporting the case, mainly coz it is only attached using the dinky little 6 hole clip doobie which i dont trust.
