so i have a spare p4 system i have loaned to my girlfriend, done a little light modding to it but my problem is that the 3.06 p4 runs at 1.56, I've tried a lot of things in bios nothing seems to change it. The motherboard is dated, its a syntax S651M, any help would be appreciated, tho this isn't a crucial problem the computer dose work fine for her im just aggravated it's missing 2/3s of the cpu. heat doesn't seem to be the problem, with the cpu in the low 40c~

Off hand I suspect that the motherboard doesn't support the fsb that your cpu requires. I guess the motherboard has a 400MHz max and you have an 800MHz CPU. You could try overclocking it back up but that relys on the motherboard having overclocking options and also being capable of the new faster fsb.

If you download and run CPUz it'll tell you what your bus speed is.

My geuss is SpeedStep is on in the bios. As it is regeestering that the full speed in 3.06, but it is running at 1.59 at the moment, if you run any program thats require a lot of cpu grunt, this should go up to the 3.06. If not then it could be quite possibley the FSB, but i very much doubt it...

I'm pretty sure speedstep wasn't available on socket 478 pentium 4 CPUs - correct me if I'm wrong though.

OK fair enough. Your CPU will be a 533MHz fsb so make sure it's set in BIOS as such (probably shown as 133MHz in the BIOS) and that your multiplier is set to 23. (23x133=3060) As you're having problems don't trust 'auto'.

Seems like the multiplier is set wrong. Do you have any options in BIOS to change that?

yep multiplier should be 23. Does it change under load (just to make absolutely sure it's not some kind of speedstep style thing) leave cpuz open and run superpi or prime95 or something to load the cpu.

if you can set the multiplier in the BIOS then do so but I suspect that it won't let you. All this looks like your CPU is not supported by the BIOS revision so it's reading the required multiplier wrongly. Maybe you'll be able to get hold of a newer BIOS and flash it otherwise you may have to settle for low speed.

I think that's probably your only option now. It doesn't seem like syntax exist anymore as far as I can see, so an updated BIOS is unlikely.
