    Folks,

I have the opportunity to buy either an Asus P5Q Deluxe or an Asus Maximus Gene II.

However, I have been looking at the Gigabyte P45 boards as I prefer Gigabyte.

I want to overclock an E8600 on air.

    Which is my better option?

Edit: Maximus is gone so P5Q Deluxe vs Gigabyte P45 boards

    Well I'm biased ;)

For OCing, I would probably say the Gene II.

But in fairness I've had by Q9450 up to 3.6Ghz stable on my P5Q. As for Gigabyte? People rave about them, but I haven't really had enough experience with them to comment, my first board was a Gigabyte, but I was still learning then (still am!) and didn't really know much stuff.

If you can get a Gigabyte EP45 UD3P, then this is an excellent board for o/c, had a Q9550 (E0) @ 4.0GHz on one, also had a Q9550 (C1) @ 4.0GHz on a P5Q Deluxe, which I would think is very similiar to the Maximus Gene II...I preferred the Gigabyte EP45 UD3P to the P5Q Deluxe.

    EDIT:

    Remedied... :p

As a personal choice I would have gone for the asus board, there's not a lot between them, but I would give the asus the edge.

My choice is limited slightly now, the Maximus Gene II is gone.

Thread change to Asus P5Q Deluxe vs Gigabyte P45 (...ducks and awaits the flames...)

Just go fro whichever's cheaper as they're very evenly matched.

The P5Q Deluxe is 2nd hand and would be hopefully be cheaper than a Gigabye - I can't find a Gigabyte used so it would be new (funny, can't find anyone selling them used, that might tell me something).

Priced new, it depends on what flavour of Gigabyte P45 I chose. The prices (new) range from about £70 to £150, depending on the particular model.

Well, I got my P5Q-E about 2.5 years ago, and the last time I saw one new it was actually more expensive than what I paid for it. Doesn't look like you can get them new anymore though.

The problem I am having is doing my homework. There are so many Gigabyte P45 models that comparisons are very time consuming (tbh, Asus have too many models as well).

What I would like to know is more around the stability of the power phases (as I will be overclocking) and the stability when overclocked. I can compare features pretty easily but it is the overclocking that is harder to find comparisons on due to the sheer amount of variables involved.

I want to get the E8600 to at least 4GHz (should be fairly easy) but I want to know about getting it above 4GHz stable. Different models seem to have different FSB "holes" as well as different temperatures, before you even factor in that the CPU's can differ. In addition, I just bought 8GB RAM (4 x 2GB) so I would like a m/b that I can o/c the CPU with all the RAM slots full. This is more me wanting to play though, I don't need 8GB and it will probably end up in a VMWare ESX server at some stage anyway.

Whatever I choose is to last me until next year when I will probably look at the new chips (and m/b's) coming out. For what I use the PC for there is no benefit in me going to an i5 or i7 until then. At most I will upgrade the graphics card (from a 4870) but it does me fine for now. Getting a new case is probably my next major purchase.

To summarise: I am wanting to hear from people with overclocking experiences with the P5Q Deluxe and any of the Gigabyte P45 motherboards. Any experiences that include and E8600 and 8GB would be a bonus.
