    And so it begins...

After months of planning and bashing my head against the wall (oh that was the fun part) I've started my venture into custom case building. The reason for the word PRIME? Simple...one of the greatest superhero's of my generation was optimus prime (you know you cried when he died in transformers the movie!).

This case is going to be a sort of artistic interpretation of the big guy himself so you'll see some resemblances. I also wanted to go back to the old days of computing. You know, when PC's weighed a ton and were built like tanks (you know...REAL PCs :)).

(First I must say thank you to dutchcedar from athlonxp forums. Without his help this would not of been possible) I started the design process and ended up with a very nice model in sketchup:

I haven't fully decided on what hardware to use, but I will definitely go with dual xeon. Same with the watercooling gear but I have an idea on what parts to use.

The case is 18-1/2" cubed and will be made with 1/4" aluminum panels. The frame itself will be made out of 80/20 extruded aluminum parts and the panels were sourced from customwatercuts.com (A BIG thanks to Chris for helping me with the panels!). They use an OMAX waterjet to cut my panels...pretty slick stuff.

So I leave you with this shot, more to come soon :)

    Re: P_R_I_M_E

    Might I reccomend:

Chevette heatercore, Eheim 1250, Iwaki MD-30RZ or Danner Mag#3, 1/2" Clearflex 60/70 or 1/2" Tygon.

Mhiran - Sorry it sorta looks that way. Its just one panel on top of another.

eddie_dane - Man I've been up to my neck in work! Ugh, but now since summer is coming around I'll have more time for more important things ;)

    Heres a quickie update:

Just in case, for those of you not familiar with 80/20 this is a company that sells extruded aluminum framing and assorted parts. Sorta like legos for grown-ups :D So I ordered round edged extrusions:

They really look great in person, nice finish and perfect for my project. They are fastened with these corner pieces:

You put them together and forms a sturdy frame for the case:

....and if you keep going you get the basic frame for PRIME:

So here are a few shots of the panels, just raw aluminum:

I was looking for something that stood out so I thought why not waterjet cut the project name into the top panel? Well this was a bit tougher than i thought, i mean choosing a font was so difficult. After finding the right one the end result was great:

The detail work is amazing! Looks great on the thicker aluminum panels. I did a quick test fit to see if the panels fit properly:

Perfect! So now comes the arduous task of wet sanding each panel smooth before I send them to get anodized. I'm really not looking forward to that (for those that have wet sanded before, you know what i mean :() but it needs to be done ;).

So what do you guys think so far? Any recommendations? Am I totally off my rocker? :D

Good work on the sketchup drawing, I wouldn't mind having a look at that in detail ;) The curved corners are possible to draw by the way. Or you could wait for Sketchup 3.0

Excellent text, I love it. The design is awsome, and I am drooling because I spy radiators :D

Keep it up, this project is gonna be cool.

Oh yes  1/4" alu is the case material of a real man :) Seriously though, that'll be one beast of a case and if you keep up the high quality work it'll look absolutely stunning.

    Wow, looks great

One quick Q. How do the corners attach? Do they snap together or use some kind of fastners? Can we have a close up?

Hmmm... sexy aluminium... :brrr: (drools over keyboard, which shorts out in a rain of sparks)...

Of course, I knew about this project all along :D and man it was hard to keep quiet! This project is going to be so huge it has its own gravitational pull!

...and by the way, I received the flow switches today. Want some with that, sir? :D
