Got a question about painting over rubberized coatings. I'm busy with my CM Storm Trooper (http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=259735) and i'd like to paint over the top and front panels, which both has sort of a rubberized coating over them. Can i just spraypaint it? or do i have to remove the rubber coating, if so, how? Thanks in advance!
If it's soft to the touch, then paint will just crack and peel. I suspect they've used this, if I am right it'll have a skin which you could peel and find a very high gloss finish under it. Without hands on I couldn't say much more than that
hmmm, it seems it's not easy to remove, but ive seen pics that were painted, not sure if they removed the coating first or just painted directly...
That is with the rubber removed. The rubberised coating will take paint but the finish would be poor, how is the rubber attached?
In that case I think you're looking at solvents for the easiest option. The other way is to get a sharp scraper (like a window scraper, bladed one) take the worst of and then sand/wire wool it down.
Just had a brain wave, get a self leveling primer and apply a few coats sanding in between coats and I think you should be good. Though I'd do it one of the ways I've listed above for the sake of thoroughness.
i had rubber coating sort of stuff in my car on the interior handles, i used nail varnish remove to get it off, the Acetone in the nail varnish remover reacts with it somehow. not sure if it would work on your case, possibly try it on an unseen spot?
